Marquette’s Howard, St. John’s Champagnie Take #BIGEASTmbb Weekly Honors
NEW YORK – Marquette guard Markus Howard has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week after averaging 33.5 points in a 1-1 week. Howard extends his career record for Player of the Week honors to 13. St. John’s Julian Champagnie has been selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Week after averaging 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds also in a 1-1 week.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Markus Howard, Marquette, G, Sr. – Howard posted a pair of 30-point games in a 1-1 week. The senior began with a 30-point effort in a 93-72 victory against Georgetown. In his final home game on Saturday, Howard poured in 37 points in an 88-79 loss to Seton Hall. For the two games, he shot 61.1 percent from the field, 57.9 percent from 3-point range and 92.3 percent from the foul line. He leads the nation in scoring with a 27.6 mark. In league play this season, Howard has a record eight 30-point games.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Julian Champagnie, St. John’s, G-F, Fr. – Champagnie averaged 11.5 points and 5.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week. In a 91-71 victory over 10th-ranked Creighton, the 6-8 guard-forward scored 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting which included a pair of 3-pointers. He had 10 points, six rebounds and three steals in a 71-60 loss at Villanova. For the season, Champagnie is averaging 9.2 points and a team-leading 6.3 rebounds.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Kamar Baldwin, Butler, G, Sr.
In a win over DePaul (60-42), had nine points, season-high eight rebounds, five assists, career-high six steals and three blocked shots.
Luwane Pipkins, Providence, G, Gr.
In PC’s only game of the week, scored a game-high 27 points in a win at No. 12 Villanova (58-54). Shot 7-of-13 from the field, 4-of-8 from 3-point range and 9-of-10 from the line.
Greg Williams Jr., St. John’s, G, So.
Scored a career-high 21 points – all on 3-pointers – in a 91-71 win against Creighton. Averaged 15.5 points in a 1-1 week. Shot a combined 9-of-20 from 3-point range.
Myles Powell, Seton Hall, G, Sr.
Scored 28 points, dealt five assists and made two steals in an 88-79 victory at Marquette. Helped the Pirates to their seventh road league win.
Naji Marshall, Xavier, G, Jr.
Averaged 21.5 points, 8.0 rebounds and 5.5 assists in a 2-0 week. Hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left in a win at Georgetown (66-63). Had game-high 23 points in win versus DePaul (78-67).
