BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Report: Golden Goals Highlight Thursday’s Action

Three of the five matches end in thrilling overtime fashion as Butler, UConn and Marquette score wins in extra time.

WSOC Notes - 10.15 update
NEW YORK –
Three of the five BIG EAST women’s soccer matches on Thursday ended as a result of golden goals as Butler, UConn and Marquette all scored overtime victories. The Huskies earned a 3-2 double-overtime home win over Creighton, the Golden Eagles held off St. John’s late-game rally 4-3 in OT and the Bulldogs won the third-place battle with Providence 1-0 in the 96th minute. Additionally, the top two teams in the standings, RV Xavier and RV Georgetown, maintained their spots with wins over DePaul and Villanova, respectively. Five more matches are on the calendar on Sunday, including a battle of two of the highest scoring teams in BIG EAST play – Marquette at Xavier at 1 p.m. ET. All five matches will stream on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi, available on FloSports.
 
UConn 3, Creighton 2 (2OT)
Jaydah Bedoya scored twice, including the game-tying goal in the 90th minute, as UConn (7-6-0, 3-3-0) rallied to defeat visiting Creighton on Thursday night. Bedoyah scored in the 68th to even the game at 1-1 after Lilli Bedell gave Creighton a 1-0 lead in the 35th. Aida Kardovic put the Bluejays (6-7-2, 0-5-1) back in front in the 82nd before Bedoya’s second score. Evelyn Arsenault’s first career goal was golden, beating Keelan Terrell in the 104th. Terrell finished with a career-high 11 saves while Kaitlyn Mahoney earned the win with one stop.

Marquette 4, St. John's 3 (OT)
In the highest-scoring match of the 2021 BIG EAST season, Marquette (8-6-0, 4-3-0) held off a furious rally by visiting St. John’s (6-5-2, 2-3-1) to pick up its fourth conference win of the season. The Golden Eagles scored twice in the first 14 minutes to take an early lead and held a 3-1 advantage at halftime. It was all Red Storm in the second half, scoring twice including the game-tying goal in the 88th minute by Athina Sofroniou. MU responded in the 98th minute as Katrina Wetherell headed home a Rachel Johnson corner to clinch the win. Mikki Easter had six saves in the win; Naya Lipkens made four stops in the loss.

Butler 1, Providence 0 (OT)
Alana Wood evaded a Providence defender and fired off a left-footed strike to the upper left corner of the goal, beating a diving Emma Bodmer in the 96th minute. The goal was the first of the season for Wood and third of her career. Shots were even at 10 apiece in the match, with Emma Martin earning the shutout win with three saves, while Bodmer was credited with five stops. The win gave Butler (11-2-1, 4-1-1) solo possession of third place in the standings as it entered the day tied with Providence (8-4-2, 3-2-1) for the spot.

RV Georgetown 5, Villanova 0 
The second-place Hoyas remained unbeaten (9-0-6, 5-0-2) on the year with their third consecutive win. Georgetown scored just 1:45 into the contest as Gia Vicari notched her ninth goal of the season. Vicari added three assists on the afternoon, while Cyanne Doyle scored twice. GU outshot Villanova (7-8-0, 1-6-0) by a 19-2 margin, as Wildcat keeper Ela Kopac, who made her first career start, made eight saves. Sharing the shutout for Georgetown was Allie Augur and Joella Chase, who each made a save.

RV Xavier 1, DePaul 0 
The first-place Musketeers (13-1-1, 6-1-0) won their fifth straight while halting the Blue Demons’ winning streak at three matches following a 1-0 decision in Chicago. Just before halftime, Dana Dahm used a header to send a Carrie Lewis corner kick into the back of the net to give Xavier the 1-0 lead at the break. XU kept DePaul (6-8-0, 3-3-0) without a shot on goal in the second to preserve the lead and score the win. Mollie Eriksson had five saves in the setback while Olivia Jenkins earned her ninth shutout of the season with four stops.
