BIG EAST Women's Soccer Report: Thursday Shutouts Cause Standings Shakeup

All five matches on Thursday night ended in shutout fashion as Xavier takes over the top spot in the standings and Georgetown jumps to No. 2.

NEW YORK –
BIG EAST women’s soccer action continued on Thursday with five matches, with all contests ending in shutout fashion. RV Xavier clipped St. John’s 1-0 to take over the top spot in the conference standings after RV Georgetown knocked off previous leader Butler, 1-0. The Hoyas jumped from fourth to second in the standings, while the Bulldogs shifted to third. Providence earned a double-overtime victory at Villanova, 1-0, to climb into the top five, while UConn (3-0 over Marquette) and DePaul (3-0 over Seton Hall) each earned their second victories of BIG EAST play to remain tied in the No. 7 spot. Five more contests are on the schedule for Sunday, including a top-five standings battle between the Hoyas and St. John’s. All five matches will stream on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi, available on FloSports.
 
RV Xavier 1, St. John's 0 
The host Musketeers (11-1-1, 4-1-0 BIG EAST) kept the pressure on St. John’s (6-3-2, 2-1-1) all night and it was Ella Rogers in the 49th minute who broke through, delivering what proved to be the game winner. Xavier outshot the Red Storm 18-7 and held a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Olivia Jenkins earned the shutout for XU with two saves, while Naya Lipkens had five stops in the setback. St. John’s Zsani Kajan, the BIG EAST points and goals leader, was held without a point for the first time in conference play this season. She ranks in the top five nationally in both categories.

RV Georgetown 1, Butler 0 
A rematch of three of the last four BIG EAST Championship title games ended in heartbreak fashion for the Bulldogs (10-2-1, 3-1-1) as the host Hoyas scored the deciding goal in the 89th minute to remain unbeaten (7-0-6, 3-0-2) on the season. Sydney Cummings’ second goal of the season came with just 67 seconds left in regulation, saving Georgetown from going into overtime for what would have been the eighth time this season. GU outshot Butler 14-8 and held a decisive 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Allie Augur made three saves to pick up the shutout win, while Emma Martin had two stops in the setback.

UConn 3, Marquette 0  
Three different Huskies scored at home on Thursday night as UConn (6-5-0, 2-2-0) won for the second time in its last three outings. Jada Konte’s 10th-minute score proved to be the game winner, while Jaydah Bedoya and Joyce Ryder added second-half insurance goals. MaryKate Ward made seven saves in her first career start to earn the shutout. Mikki Easter had seven saves for Marquette (7-5-0, 3-2-0), who saw Madison Burrier and Maggie Starker each take a team-high three shots.

DePaul 3, Seton Hall 0 
Morgan Turner posted her second straight multi-goal game, scoring twice as the Blue Demons (5-7-0, 2-2-0) earned a road win over Seton Hall. Turner beat the keeper in the ninth and 46th minutes, with the first goal proving to be the game winner. She now had nine scores on the season to tie Butler’s Katie Soderstrom for No. 2 in the BIG EAST. The win was DePaul’s second straight. Seton Hall (6-7-0, 1-4-0) outshot DePaul 12-5, as Blue Demon goalie Mollie Eriksson made seven saves to earn the shutout. Kristin Boos also scored for DePaul, while Grace Gordon had one save for the Pirates.

Providence 1, Villanova 0 (2OT)
Meg Hughes scored the 107th minute golden goal as Providence (7-3-2, 2-1-1) stretched its unbeaten streak to three matches. The Friars outshot Villanova (6-7-0, 0-5-0) by a 19-5 margin, including 4-1 in the overtime periods. Emma Bodmer made two saves to claim her fourth shutout of the season, while Megan McClay had five stops in the loss. Hughes took a game-high nine shots on the afternoon, with the goal being her team-leading seventh of the season.
