Seton Hall, DePaul Post Comfortable Victories

Following an 8-0 opening night on Tuesday, Seton Hall and DePaul joined the group of league teams that won their openers by posting large margins of victory on Wednesday.

Seton Hall registered a 93-49 win against Fairleigh Dickinson and DePaul began the Tony Stubblefield era with a 97-72 triumph over Coppin State.

For Seton Hall, Tyrese Samuel came off the bench to record his first career double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. He also blocked four shots. Myles Cale began his fifth season of play with 15 points and six rebounds.  He went over the 1,000-point mark for his career. A 20-2 run late in the first half propelled the Pirates to the comfortable victory. The win was the 250th in coach Kevin Willard’s 15 seasons as a head coach.

DePaul’s Stubblefield got his first career victory in his head coaching debut. After leading 41-40 at half, the Blue Demons outscored Coppin State 56-32 in the second half. Javon Freeman-Liberty, the Blue Demons’ lone returning full-time starter, flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 25 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. Sophomore David Jones came off the bench to post 23 points and 17 boards in only 23 minutes of playing time.

Two teams will look to move to 2-0 in the early season with Thursday home matchups on FS1. At 6:30 p.m. ET, Providence hosts Sacred Heart. The Friars beat Fairfield 80-73 on Tuesday.  Providence has a veteran group this season with a school record five graduate students on the roster. At 8:30 p.m., Creighton meets Kennesaw State. The Bluejays used a strong second half to beat Arkansas-Pine Bluff 90-77 on Tuesday. They will be aiming to start 2-0 for the 11th time in the last 12 seasons.
