MBB Minute – St. John’s Rallies To Win, But Providence and Butler Fall Short on Tuesday

St. John’s had to forge a comeback to beat a local foe, while Providence and Butler lost in tournament play.

St. John’s trailed by nine points with 10 minutes to go before an 18-2 run lifted the Johnnies past St. Francis Brooklyn 76-70 at Carnesecca Arena. Julian Champagnie scored 12 of his game-high 23 points during the late spurt. Montez Mathis added 20 points on 8-of-10 shooting. St. John’s was without Posh Alexander who sat out due to injury.

Providence couldn’t find any offense in a 58-40 loss to Virginia in the championship game of the Legends Classic at Prudential Center and suffered their first loss of the season (5-1). The Friars shot only 23.5 percent from the field against the vaunted Cavalier defense. Noah Horchler was the most productive Friar with 14 points and seven rebounds.

Butler cut a 13-point second-half deficit to three in the final minute, but could not come all the way back in a 57-50 loss to Texas A&M in the second round of the Maui Invitational played in Las Vegas. Jair Bolden was the only Bulldog to reach double figures, scoring 10 points. Butler (3-3) was hampered by 19 turnovers to only 12 for the Aggies.

The four games on Wednesday’s schedule are all in tournament play. Three of the contests include at least one ranked team.

No. 22 Connecticut (4-0) and No. 25 Xavier (4-0) are away from home for the first time this season. The Huskies battle No. 19 Auburn in the first round of the Battle4Atlantis at 2:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Musketeers meet Iowa State in the NIT Tip-Off at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on ESPNU at 7 p.m. It will be the Musketeers’ first game away from the Cintas Center this season. No. 21 Seton Hall (3-1) meets California in the third-place game at the Fort Myers Tip-Off at 6 p.m. on FS1. Butler finishes play in the Maui Invitational against Chaminade at 9 p.m. also on ESPNU.
