Georgetown Wins 2021 BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship

Hoyas defeat St. John’s 1-0 to earn automatic berth into the NCAA Championship.

CINCINNATI, Ohio – No. 2 seed Georgetown defeated No. 4 seed St. John’s 1-0 Sunday afternoon in the BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship Final at Corcoran Field in Cincinnati, Ohio. With the win, the Hoyas earn the BIG EAST’s automatic berth into the 2021 NCAA Championship. The NCAA Championship Selection Show is slated for Monday at 4:30 p.m. ET on NCAA.com.  
 
Sydney Cummings provided the game’s lone score and was named BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Offensive Player at the end of the match. Georgetown’s Julia Leas was named Most Outstanding Defensive Player, joining Cummings on the 11-person All-Tournament Team.
 
Fellow Hoyas Kelly Ann Livingstone and Maya Fernandez-Powell, who had the assist on Cummings’ score, were also named to the All-Tournament Team. St. John’s saw Michelle Money, Katherine Turner and Shannon Aviza recognized, while Butler’s Abby Isger and Katie Soderstrom, and Xavier’s Molly McLaughlin and Sonia Vargas were also All-Tourney selections.
 
Fernandez-Powell served up the corner kick which Cummings headed home in the 64th minute. Georgetown finished with a 9-2 advantage in shots and 6-1 lead in corner kicks on the afternoon. St. John’s turned up the pressure after the Hoyas took the lead, with its best opportunity coming in the 84th minute as Jessica Garziano’s strike just missed. Allie Augur had two saves to earn the shutout victory while Naya Lipkens had one stop in the setback.
 
Georgetown improved to 13-1-6 with the win, while the Red Storm moved to 12-6-2. The Red Storm claimed their first runner-up trophy in conference history.
 
The BIG EAST title is Georgetown’s second straight and fifth in the last six years for head coach Dave Nolan’s squad. The Hoyas lock up their 10th consecutive NCAA Championship berth and 12th national postseason bid overall.
 
St. John’s and the rest of the BIG EAST will wait to see if they earn at-large selections. The Red Storm entered the day ranked No. 45 in the NCAA RPI. Other notable BIG EAST RPIs include regular-season champion Xavier at No. 9, Butler at No. 35 and Providence at No. 33.
