Liberty Defeats UConn 1-0 To Capture Field Hockey Championship

Lady Flames Grab First League Crown, End Huskies' Nine-Year Reign

STORRS, CONN. – The Lady Flames prevailed Sunday at the Sherman Family Sports Complex on the campus of the University of Connecticut. 
 
Liberty earned the BIG EAST’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.  The NCAA Championship selection show is 10 p.m. ET Sunday night on NCAA.com.
 
Liberty’s title ended a streak of nine straight BIG EAST crowns by the Huskies.  UConn also had won 19 straight BIG EAST tourney games.

Bolton made a steal from the Husky defense and slipped a shot past UConn goalkeeper Cheyenne Sprecher at 41:08 and the Lady Flames held off the Huskies in the fourth quarter.  Bolton was named the Most Outstanding Player in the Championship.  She also scored a goal in Liberty’s 4-2 win over Temple in the semifinals. 
 
Bolton was joined on the All-Tournament Team by forwards Daniella Rhodes and Charlotte Vaanhold along with back Bethany Dykema.  UConn’s All-Tournament Team representatives were Sprecher, back Claire Jandewerth and midfield Abby Gooderham.
 
Liberty held UConn to three shots and two penalty corners.  UConn (11-11) also played a strong defensive game, limiting the Lady Flames to a pair of penalty corners.  Sprecher made six saves.
 
Liberty (17-2) extended its winning streak to 14 in a row.
