NEW YORK – Seton Hall forward Sandro Mamukelashvili has been named BIG EAST Player of the Week and St. John’s guard Posh Alexander has been selected BIG EAST Freshman of the Week. Both players sparked their teams to 2-0 weeks. Mamukelashvili was the game’s high scorer in both Pirate wins, which came on the road. Alexander helped the Red Storm beat league-leader Villanova and Providence.
BIG EAST Player of the Week
Sandro Mamukelashvili, Seton Hall, F, Jr. – Mamukelashvili led Seton Hall to a pair of road wins by posting game scoring highs in both contests. For the two games, he averaged 21.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists, while shooting 50 percent from the field, 50 percent from 3-point range and 85.7 percent from the foul line. He scored a game-high 22 points in an 80-73 win at Connecticut and 20 points in a 60-43 victory at Providence.
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Posh Alexander, St. John’s, G, Fr. – Alexander takes Freshman of the Week honors for a third straight week after leading St. John’s to a 70-59 win over No. 3 Villanova and a 92-81 victory at Providence. He shot 53.6 percent from the field and 55.6 percent from 3-point range. Alexander had 16 points and six assists versus Villanova and a season-best 21 points and four assists at Providence.
BIG EAST Honor Roll
Chuck Harris, Butler, G, Fr. – Averaged 19.0 points, including 62 percent 3-point shooting in a 1-1 week. Matched his collegiate high with 22 points in a win against DePaul (68-58).
Qudus Wahab, Georgetown, C, So. – Averaged 14.5 points and 7.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week that included a win at Creighton (86-79). Shot 13-of-20 from the floor. Tied his career scoring high with 17 points at Villanova (84-74).
Christian Bishop, Creighton, F, Jr. – Averaged 14.0 points and 9.0 rebounds, while shooting 78.6 percent from the field (11-of-14) in a 1-1 week.
Julian Champagnie, St. John’s, F, So. – Averaged 19.0 points and 11.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week. Had 14 points and 13 rebounds against Villanova (70-59) and 24 points and 10 boards in a win at Providence (92-81).
Jermaine Samuels, Villanova, F, Sr. – Posted a career-high 32 points, including 6-of-7 from 3-point range, six rebounds, five assists and three steals in a win over Georgetown (84-74). Averaged 17.0 points and 6.0 boards in a 1-1 week.
