NEW YORK – The BIG EAST Conference has announced the cancelation of this weekend’s Butler at Creighton softball series. Due to COVID-19 issues within the Bluejays program, Creighton will also be unable to compete for a spot in the upcoming BIG EAST Softball Championship presented by JEEP, set for May 13-15 at UConn’s Burrill Family Field. The top four teams in the BIG EAST standings qualify for the conference postseason. Creighton is currently in fourth place with an 8-7 (.533) league record.
With Creighton no longer in contention, the final spot will now come down to either Butler (6-11-1, .361) or Seton Hall (4-11, .267). The Pirates will need to sweep three games at Providence this weekend to leapfrog the Bulldogs in the standings at 7-11 (.389) – any other outcome, whether it’s a loss or game not played, would result in Butler clinching the No. 4 seed. DePaul (13-1, .929), Villanova (12-2, .857) and UConn (12-6, .667) have already clinched spots in the BIG EAST Championship field. The Wildcats and Huskies play this weekend to determine seeding. Villanova will clinch the No. 2 seed with one win over UConn, while the Huskies can clinch the No. 2 with a three-game sweep of the Wildcats.
