BIG EAST Women's Soccer Report: No. 25 Georgetown, Providence Win Overtime Thrillers

Five-match Sunday also sees Butler, St. John’s remain undefeated in league play and Marquette score a road win.

NEW YORK – No. 25 Georgetown won the top-25 BIG EAST women’s soccer battle with No. 21 Xavier in overtime, 2-1, highlighting a five-match conference play Sunday. Providence also benefitted from a golden goal as the Friars knocked off Creighton in OT, 1-0. Butler and St. John’s stayed undefeated in BIG EAST play with wins over Seton Hall and DePaul, respectively, while Marquette scored its first conference win with a 3-1 victory at Villanova. Action continues on Thursday, beginning at 4 p.m. ET when the Hoyas play their conference home opener against the Blue Demons. That match kicks off a five-match Thursday, with all five contests streaming on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi, available on FloSports.
 
#25 Georgetown 2, #21 Xavier 1 (OT)
Gia Vicari’s golden goal in the 96th minute clinched the win for the 25th-ranked Hoyas and kept Georgetown unbeaten on the year and in BIG EAST play (5-0-5, 1-0-1 BIG EAST).  Vicari scored both GU goals on the afternoon, beginning in the 12th minute as Georgetown struck first. Ella Rogers leveled the score at 1-1 in the 40th, her second goal for the Musketeers this season. Xavier outshot Georgetown 4-0 in the second half but neither team broke through the remainder of regulation. The Hoyas outshot XU 3-0 in overtime, including Vicari’s decisive strike. Allie Augur finished with two saves in the win while Olivia Jenkins had three stops in the setback. The loss was the first of the season for Xavier, which moved to 8-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in conference play.

Providence 1, Creighton 0 (OT)
Kyla Gallagher scored the 94th minute golden goal to give Providence (6-3-1, 1-1-0) its first BIG EAST win of the season as the Friars played their second consecutive overtime tilt and third in the last four matches. PC outshot Creighton (6-3-2, 0-1-1) by a 16-7 margin, including 3-0 in overtime, while Emma Bodmer made four saves to claim her third shutout of the season. Keelan Terrell had four saves for the Bluejays, who were also playing in their second straight overtime game.

Butler 3, Seton Hall 1
The Pirates struck first as Cara Milne-Redhead scored just 16:13 into the contest but three unanswered Bulldog goals, including two by Anastasia Savich, helped keep Butler undefeated (2-0-0) in BIG EAST play. Savich’s second goal proved to be the game winner, before Julia Leonard provided the insurance score. Katie Soderstrom was credited with a pair of assists. Butler outshot Seton Hall (6-4-0, 1-1-0) by a 19-8 margin, with Grace Gordon making seven saves for the Pirates. Emma Martin and Stephanie Rodriguez were each credited with a save in the win. Butler has won nine straight to improve to 9-1-0 on the season.

St. John’s 1, DePaul 0
Naya Lipkens made a career-high 12 saves to earn her fifth solo shutout of the season as Ava Collins’ goal in the seventh minute proved to be the early game winner for the Red Storm (6-2-1, 2-0-0). DePaul (3-6-0, 0-1-0) outshot St. John’s 17-7 but couldn’t slip one by Lipkens, who bumped her save percentage to .830 on the year to rank third in the BIG EAST. DePaul’s Olivia Cooke had a game-high six shots while Mollie Eriksson had three saves in the setback.

Marquette 3, Villanova 1
An own goal gave Villanova a 1-0 lead 20 minutes into the contest, but Marquette (5-4-0, 1-1-0) responded with three unanswered scores to claim its first BIG EAST win of the season. Three different Golden Eagles scored, including Elsi Twombly, Rachel Johnson and Maggie Starker, with Johnson’s 31st minute strike being the game winner. MU split time in goal between Mikki Easter and Lauren Schill, who combined for five saves. Villanova’s Megan McClay posted five saves as Marquette outshot the Wildcats (6-4-0, 0-2-0) by an 18-9 margin.
