MBB Minute – Villanova, UConn Squeak Out Wednesday Wins

On Wednesday, Villanova held on to win at Xavier and Connecticut prevailed over St. John’s in overtime. 
 
The Wildcats (12-4, 5-1 BIG EAST) edged the Musketeers (12-3, 2-2 BE) 64-60 at a sold-out Cintas Center. Villanova, ranked 14th by Associated Press this week, won its fifth straight game behind Collin Gilliespie, who had 21 points, and Justin Moore, who added 19. Eric Dixon finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds. No. 17 Xavier trailed by 17 points in the first half, but rallied to tie the game 56-56 with 2:17 left on a 3-pointer by Paul Scruggs, who finished with 15 points. The Musketeers committed a season-low six turnovers.
 
UConn played its fourth overtime game of the season and its second straight. The Huskies (11-4, 2-2 BE) used an 11-0 run in overtime to secure the victory. Adama Sanogo was a huge force with 26 points, 18 rebounds and six blocked shots. UConn blocked 14 shots, the most by any BIG EAST team this season. St. John’s (9-5, 1-2 BE) was led by Julian Champagnie, who scored 27 points. His 3-pointer with four seconds left in regulation gave the Johnnies a 71-70 lead before a free throw by Sanogo forced the extra session.
 
Thursday action starts early with Seton Hall visiting DePaul for a 5 p.m. ET tipoff on FS1. The 20th-ranked Pirates (11-3, 2-2 BE) also play at Marquette on Saturday. The Blue Demons (9-6, 0-5 BE) will be aiming to end a five-game losing streak. This matchup was originally scheduled for Dec. 23.
 
Butler (8-6, 1-2 BE) at Georgetown (6-6, 0-1 BE) follows at 7 p.m., also on FS1. The two teams have split the last 10 meetings. Georgetown coach Patrick Ewing will miss the game in accordance with D.C. Department of Health guidelines.
