MBB Minute – St. John’s Avenges Saturday Loss to Seton Hall

In the first BIG EAST game played on the Seton Hall campus since 1985, it was visiting St. John’s that enjoyed the cozy confines. The Johnnies got their pressing defense going early and posted a comfortable 84-63 victory at Walsh Gym in front of a crowd of mostly Seton Hall students.

Seton Hall (12-6, 3-5 BIG EAST) had defeated St. John’s (11-7, 3-4 BE) 66-60 on Saturday at Madison Square Garden. Johnnies’ coach Mike Anderson called Posh Alexander the “general” who sparked Monday’s turnaround. Alexander filled his box score line with a game-high 19 points, seven rebounds, five assists and three steals. Aaron Wheeler continued his recent strong play with a career-high 17 points and 10 rebounds.

Myles Cale led Seton Hall with 16 points. Jared Rhoden finished with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Pirates are back in action on Wednesday at home against Marquette. St. John’s plays at Villanova on Saturday.

A two-game Tuesday starts with DePaul at Villanova at 7 p.m. ET on FS1. The Blue Demons held an eight-point second-half lead at Creighton on Saturday before losing 60-47. Four of Villanova’s 14 wins have come after trailing at the break. The Wildcats have won the last 21 games in the series against the Blue Demons.

Connecticut hosts Georgetown at Gampel Pavilion on CBS Sports Network at 8:30 p.m. The Huskies’ top three scorers are averaging just over 15 points per game – Tyrese Martin (15.7), Adama Sanogo (15.6) and R.J. Cole (15.2). The Hoyas are still in search of their first league win. Aminu Mohammed is the BIG EAST’s top freshman scorer (13.6) and rebounder (8.2).

For the first time since the AP poll on Feb. 17, 2020, the BIG EAST has five teams ranked – No. 14 Villanova, No. 17 Providence, No. 20 UConn, No. 21 Xavier, and No. 22 Marquette.
