MBB Minute – Villanova, UConn Notch Tuesday Homecourt Victories

Nationally ranked Villanova and Connecticut picked up victories on their respective homecourts on Tuesday. Both wins came by 20+ points.

The No. 14 Wildcats (15-5, 8-2 BIG EAST) defeated DePaul 67-43 and the 20th-ranked Huskies (14-4, 5-2 BE) beat Georgetown 96-73.
Villanova excelled defensively again in nailing down its eighth victory in the last nine games. For the third time in the last seven outings, the Wildcats held their opponent to less than 44 points. Offensively, Justin Moore scored a team-high 16 points and Collin Gillespie added 14 points. The Blue Demons (10-9, 1-8 BE) were led by Javan Johnson’s 16 points. Javon Freeman-Liberty, the league’s leading scorer with a 21.1 average, missed his third straight game due to injury.

UConn got its offense going against the Hoyas (6-11, 0-6 BE), placing five players in double figures. Adama Sanogo finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Isaiah Whaley and reserve Jordan Hawkins each added 15 points. The margin of victory was the UConn’s largest over Georgetown in a BIG EAST game. Aminu Mohammed continued to shine for the Hoyas. He posted 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while shooting 6-of-11 from the floor and 3-of-4 from beyond the arc.

Wednesday’s schedule shows three games. No. 17 Providence travels to No. 21 Xavier for a 6:30 p.m. ET tipoff on CBS Sports Network.  The game will be the seventh league contest this season between ranked teams. The Friars’ 6-1 BIG EAST record is the best start in school history. Xavier will be hosting its third ranked team this season at Cintas Center. The Musketeers, who are 4-3 in league play, beat then-No. 19 Ohio State and lost to then-No. 14 Villanova.

Also at 6:30 p.m., Creighton visits Butler in the first game of an FS1 doubleheader. In last year’s meeting at Hinkle Fieldhouse, the Bulldogs won 70-66 in overtime. The Bluejays won 93-73 in Omaha and 87-56 in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals. They also defeated Ohio 72-58 at Hinkle in the NCAA Tournament. Creighton’s Alex O’Connell has posted consecutive career scoring highs in his last two games with 22 and 28 points.

The FS1 twin bill continues with No. 22 Marquette playing at Seton Hall at 8:30 p.m. The Golden Eagles are riding a six-game winning streak, which includes a 73-72 win over the Pirates on Jan. 15. During the winning streak, MU is shooting 50.0 percent from the floor and 42.7 percent from 3-point range. The Pirates are 8-1 at Prudential Center and will play three of their next four contests in Newark.
