In Wednesday action, Providence and Marquette continued their strong, streaky play while Butler ended a losing streak.
No. 17 Providence remained alone in first place in the league standings with a dramatic 65-62 win at No. 21 Xavier. After the Musketeers overcame a 14-point deficit and took the lead in the final minute, PC’s Jared Bynum hit a 3-pointer with 1.5 seconds left to give the Friars (17-2, 7-1 BIG EAST) the win. Al Durham scored a game-high 22 points and Bynum had 16. Providence’s 17-2 overall mark is the program’s best since 1976-77. Xavier (14-4, 4-4 BE) got 16 points from Paul Scruggs and 15 points and nine rebounds from Jack Nunge.
No. 22 Marquette (14-6, 7-3 BE) extended its winning streak to seven games with a 73-63 victory at Seton Hall. MU’s Justin Lewis could not be contained. The forward had 33 points, nine rebounds, six assists and three steals. He shot 11-of-19 from the floor, including 4-of-7 from 3-point range. Seton Hall (12-7, 3-6 BE) was led by reserve Jamir Harris, who had 16 points. Jared Rhoden added 14 points and nine boards. The Hall’s Bryce Aiken remained out due to concussion protocol.
Butler’s 18-2 run that began six minutes into the second half helped end a four-game losing streak and lift the Bulldogs (10-10, 3-6 BE) to a 72-55 victory over visiting Creighton (12-6, 4-3 BE). The Bulldogs made five 3-pointers during the scoring spurt. Bo Hodges paced four Butler players in double figures with 18 points. Chuck Harris and Simas Lukosius each added 14 points. Arthur Kaluma was the top performer for the Bluejays with 18 points.
Saturday’s schedule is heavy with four games, one on FOX and three on FS1. The FOX telecast has No. 14 Villanova hosting St. John’s at 4:30 ET. The FS1 lineup is: Georgetown at Butler at noon, Xavier at Creighton at 2 p.m., and No. 20 UConn at DePaul at 6:30 p.m.
The Marquette at Providence game has been moved from Saturday to Sunday at 12:30 p.m. due to expected severe weather in Rhode Island. FS1 will televise.
