League Standings
NEW YORK- With two play dates remaining in conference play and a seven-point lead in the standings, No. 16 Georgetown clinched the BIG EAST women’s soccer regular-season title following its 1-0 win over Marquette on Thursday. The Hoyas (8-0-1 BIG EAST) will play their final regular season match on Sunday on the road against Butler. Georgetown also locked up the No. 1 seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship and received a first-round bye to the semifinals.
RV Xavier is the only other team to clinch a spot in the conference tournament so far. The Musketeers (5-0-3 BIG EAST) can lock in the No. 2 seed with a win on Sunday against Creighton. Xavier will finish the season on Oct. 27 at Marquette.
The current third-place team is Creighton (4-2-2 BIG EAST). The Bluejays can clinch their spot in the tournament with a win Sunday on the road against Xavier. They can also clinch with a draw against the Musketeers with a St. John’s win or Providence win against UConn on Sunday. With a loss to Xavier, Creighton would still be in if both St. John’s and Providence won their respective matches on Sunday. The Bluejays are still in the hunt even if they do not clinch a spot Sunday.
St. John’s (4-2-2 BIG EAST) is currently the fourth-place team and clinch a spot in the tournament with a win or draw against Marquette Sunday. Even if the Red Storm lose, they can still clinch with a Connecticut loss to Providence on Sunday. No matter the result on Sunday, St. John’s is still alive heading into the final date of matches.
Butler (4-3-1 BIG EAST) is still in the hunt, as well, sitting in fifth place. With a win on Sunday against Georgetown, the Bulldogs could finish anywhere from second to seventh, but can clinch a spot if Marquette or UConn loses or draws on Sunday. They can also clinch if they draw the Hoyas and both UConn and Marquette lose.
Both UConn (3-4-1 BIG EAST) and Marquette (3-4-1 BIG EAST) are in the same situations as they are tied for the sixth and final spot in the tournament. Both teams could tie Butler in the standings with a win on Sunday and a Bulldog loss. If both teams draw on Sunday, they would still be in the hunt for the final spot. If both teams stay tied in the standings, UConn has the tiebreaker as the Huskies defeated the Golden Eagles 2-1 on Oct. 2.
The final two teams in the hunt are Providence (2-4-2 BIG EAST) and Villanova (2-5-1 BIG EAST). If Providence loses to UConn on Sunday, the Friars will be eliminated from tournament contention. As for the Wildcats, Villanova must win against DePaul to stay alive. Both DePaul (1-6-1 BIG EAST) and Seton Hall (1-7-1) have been eliminated from tournament contention.
The remaining regular season matches can be streamed on the BIG EAST Digital Network on FloSports. BEDN’s postseason coverage begins in the first round on Oct. 30 and continues into the semifinals on Nov. 3. FS1 will air the BIG EAST Championship title game on Nov. 6 at 1:30 p.m. ET. The winner of that match wins the conference’s automatic bid into the 2022 NCAA Championship.
