Hoyas, Pirates, Johnnies, Friars Grab Saturday Wins

MBB Minute – BIG EAST teams were 4-0 on Saturday with Georgetown, Seton Hall, St. John’s and Providence recording home wins. All four squads have 2-0 records. BIG EAST teams are 20-1 this season.
 
Georgetown exploded for 61 points in the second half in a 92-58 victory over Green Bay. For the second straight game, Primo Spears was the top scorer. The transfer netted a game-high 21 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Brandon Murray was second to Spears again in the scoring column with 19 points.
 
For Seton Hall, it was the defense that was the biggest difference in an 80-44 win against Saint Peter’s, the former school of Pirate coach Shaheen Holloway. The Hall held the Peacocks to 27.6 percent shooting from the field for the game and held the visitors scoreless for the first six minutes of the second half. Al-Amir Dawes and Dre Davis each scored 13 points.
 
St. John’s and Providence each used 13-0 runs in the second half to pull away to victory. The Johnnies led Lafayette 34-32 at the break before recording an 83-68 victory. David Jones led St. John’s in scoring for the second straight game with 20 points. Joel Soriano scored all of his 13 points in the second half and notched his straight double-double, grabbing 10 rebounds.
 
Providence led Northeastern 38-36 at the break before winning 89-65. Jared Bynum registered game highs of 21 points and nine rebounds. Transfer Bryce Hopkins posted his first double-double as a Friar with 10 points and 11 boards. PC held Northeastern to 30.8 percent shooting in the second half.
 
No BIG EAST games on Sunday. The schedule picks up on Monday with the start of the Gavitt Tipoff Games and several non-conference contests. The first Gavitt Tipoff Games contest is DePaul at Minnesota at 7 p.m. ET on BTN.
