DePaul Wins at Minnesota in Gavitt Games Opener

MBB Minute – On a 3-1 Monday for BIG EAST teams, DePaul won at Minnesota in the first day of the Gavitt Tipoff Games. BIG EAST teams are 23-2 this season.
 
The Blue Demons won their fourth straight game in the Gavitt Games series with their 69-53 victory against the Gophers. Javan Johnson scored a team-high 20 points and Philmon Gebrewhit came off the bench to add 18 points. The win was also the fifth straight for DePaul against a Big Ten opponent.
 
In the other Gavitt Tipoff Games battle, Butler lost at Penn State 68-62. The Bulldogs led early in the second half before the Nittany Lions put together a 20-6 run to grab the win. Butler newcomer Manny Bates had his second straight double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. He also blocked three shots.
 
Creighton, ranked 10th this week in the Associated Press poll, had little trouble with visiting Holy Cross, winning 94-65. Ryan Kalkbrenner made 10-of-10 from the floor, finishing with 20 points. Ryan Nembhard scored only five points, but had 12 assists with no turnovers. The Bluejays led 52-27 at halftime.
 
Villanova did not make a 3-pointer in the first half, but eventually overcame its cold shooting to defeat Delaware State 60-50. Eric Dixon finished with 17 points and seven rebounds. Brandon Slater made all 12 of his free throws and added 15 points.
 
Two more Gavitt Tipoff Games contests highlight a busy five-game schedule on Tuesday. At 6:30 p.m. ET, Georgetown hosts Northwestern followed by Marquette at Purdue at 8:30 p.m. FS1 will televise both contests.
 
Providence starts the Tuesday action early with a home game against Stonehill, PC coach Ed Cooley’s alma mater, at 5 p.m. on FS2. The FS2 coverage continues at 7 p.m. when St. John’s hosts Central Connecticut State at Carnesecca Arena and at 9 p.m. when Xavier welcomes Fairfield. UConn, which got into the AP poll at No. 25, hosts Buffalo at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network.
