MBB Minute – In the only action involving a BIG EAST team on Wednesday, Seton Hall lost 83-67 to Iowa in the Gavitt Tipoff Games at Prudential Center.
The Pirates’ Dre Davis came off the bench to score a team-high 13 points and Kadary Richmond and Jamir Harris each added 11. The Hall (2-1) had 16 turnovers to only eight for Iowa and managed only a 35.8 shooting percentage from the field.
The Gavitt Games continue Thursday when St. John’s hosts Nebraska at Carnesecca Arena at 6:30 p.m. ET on FS1. The Johnnies and Cornhuskers met in the 2017 Gavitt Games when St. John’s won 79-56. This season, the 3-0 Johnnies are averaging 90.3 points per game.
After the St. John’s-Nebraska contest, FS1 will carry UC-Riverside at Creighton at 8:30 p.m. The 10
th-ranked Bluejays are finishing a four-game homestand. Ryan Kalkbrenner is averaging 18.0 points and 6.3 rebounds. He is shooting 80 percent from the field through the first three games of the year.
FS2 also has a doubleheader with Butler hosting St. Francis, Pa. at 6:30 p.m. and Long Island visiting Marquette at 8:30 p.m.
Butler’s Manny Bates has posted double-doubles in his first two games as a Bulldog. He is averaging 20.5 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.0 blocked shots and has not committed a turnover. Butler has won 65 of its last 67 non-conference games at home.
Marquette is looking to bounce back from its 75-70 loss at Purdue on Tuesday in the Gavitt Games. Tyler Kolek leads the BIG EAST in assists with a 10.5 average. He’s had 11 assists in each of his last two games.
BIG EAST teams are 27-5 this season.
