MBB Minute – Marquette and Providence will enjoy Thanksgiving dinner after recording victories on Wednesday.
Marquette took the third-place game at the Ft. Myers Tipoff with an 84-60 win against Georgia Tech. The backcourt of Kam Jones and Tyler Kolek led the Golden Eagles (4-2). Jones scored 19 points and Kolek contributed 14 points, six assists and five rebounds. Marquette took control in the first half and earned a 41-28 lead by halftime.
Providence picked up a home victory with a 71-57 decision against Merrimack. Ed Croswell paced a balanced scoring attack with 17 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds. Three other Friars (4-2) reached double figures. PC gained a double-digit edge late in the first half and was not seriously challenged after the break.
In a top-shelf hoops battle, No. 14 Arizona outlasted No. 10 Creighton 81-79 in the Maui Invitational title game. The Bluejays (6-1) put together a late 12-2 run, but fell short. Ryan Nembhard netted 20 points and dished six assists. Ryan Kalkbrenner and Trey Alexander had 16 and 15 points, respectively. Baylor Scheierman had his third double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
Butler fell to a strong defensive effort by No. 22 Tennessee and lost 71-45 in the first round of the Battle 4 Atlantis. The Bulldogs shot 32 percent from the field and committed 23 turnovers. Jayden Taylor, who had 18 points, was the only Butler player in double figures.
Georgetown fell behind early in the second half against American and could not recover in a 74-70 loss. Playing without second-leading scorer Brandon Murray, the Hoyas (3-3) were led by Primo Spears’ 15 points.
A five-game turkey day slate starts at 3:30 p.m. ET when Villanova meets Iowa State in the first round of the Phil Knight Invitational in Portland, Ore. No. 20 Connecticut is also participating and will battle Oregon at 8 p.m. Xavier, which is also playing in the parallel Phil Knight Legacy, battles Florida at 5:30 p.m. ESPN2 will carry all three games. Seton Hall meets Memphis at 7:30 p.m. on ENews in the first round of ESPN Events International in Orlando, Fla. Butler plays BYU at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN3 in the second round of the Battle 4 Atlantis.
