BIG EAST Enjoys 4-1 Thanksgiving Day

MBB Minute – BIG EAST teams took four of five games in their respective tournaments on Thanksgiving Day. All five squads are back in action on Friday in addition to a non-tournament contest.
 
No. 20 Connecticut (6-0) set a school record with 17 3-pointers in an 83-59 win against Oregon in the Phil Knight Invitational. Tristen Newton made 5-of-6 from beyond the arc while scoring 21 of his 23 points in the first half. Jordan Hawkins also made five 3-pointers and finished with 18 points.
 
Playing in the parallel Phil Knight Legacy, Xavier (4-1) placed five players in double figures with Souley Boum and Colby Jones each scoring 22 points in a 90-83 victory against Florida. It was a career scoring high for Jones.
 
Seton Hall’s Tyrese Samuel scored the Pirates’ final seven points of the game, including a banked 3-pointer at the buzzer in a 70-69 win over Memphis in the ESPN Events International. Samuel finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds for his third career double-double.
 
Butler (4-2) built a solid lead against BYU in the Battle 4 Atlantis, then held on for a 75-70 victory. Jayden Taylor led the Bulldogs with 20 points. Butler shot 52 percent from the floor and had three other players reach double figures.
 
Villanova got 25 points, seven rebounds and seven assists from Caleb Daniels, but the Wildcats (2-3) lost to Iowa State 81-79 in overtime in the Phil Knight Invitational. Eric Dixon had 21 points and boards. All three of the Wildcats’ losses have come by two points.
 
The in-season tournament action continues Friday. In addition, DePaul (3-2) hosts Texas A&M at 1 p.m. ET on FS1.
 
The other contests: Villanova vs. Portland on ESPN2 at 3 p.m.; Xavier vs. Duke on ESPN at 3:30 p.m.; Seton Hall vs. Oklahoma on ESPN2 at 8 p.m.; UConn vs. Alabama on ESPN at 9:30 p.m.; Butler vs. NC State on ESPN2 at 10 p.m.
