Feast Of Wins On Friday

BIG EAST women’s basketball teams went 7-1 in non-conference play the day after Thanksgiving, highlighted by DePaul’s 76-67 win over No. 14/17 Maryland in the nationally televised opening game of the Fort Myers Tip-Off. No. 3/3 UConn, No. 23/RV Villanova and St. John’s remained undefeated on the season as the Huskies cruised by RV/RV Duke 78-50 at the Phil Knight Legacy Tournament, the Wildcats defeated Belmont 83-80 at the Gulf Coast Showcase and the Red Storm knocked off Memphis 61-57 at the Las Vegas Invitational. Additionally, Butler opened play at the Florida Atlantic Thanksgiving Tournament with a 64-39 win over Sacred Heart, Seton Hall scored an 83-72 win over Wisconsin at the Paradise Jam and Providence doubled-up Hartford 60-30 in the first game of the Friar Thanksgiving Classic. DePaul’s win over the 14th-ranked Terps boosted the BIG EAST’s record to 7-1 against ranked teams this season.
 
Individual Performances Of Note
Familiar names shined in non-league action on Friday, with Seton Hall’s Lauren Park-Lane going off for 37 points in the win over Wisconsin and Villanova’s Maddy Siegrist dropping 29 in a win over Belmont. Nika Muhl, the nation’s assists leader, recorded double-digit dimes for the second straight game, dishing 10 helpers in UConn’s win over RV/RV Duke. Three Blue Demons recorded double-doubles as DePaul upset 14th-ranked Maryland – Aneesah Morrow (22 points, 18 rebounds), Jorie Allen (10 points, 13 rebounds) and Keke Rimmer (13 points, 12 rebounds).
 
No. 16/15 Creighton Edges Xavier In #BIGEASTwbb Opener
Creighton and Xavier opened conference play on Friday with the upset-minded Musketeers coming up just shy as the 16th-ranked Bluejays scored the 57-51 road win. Neither team shot the ball well as the Bluejays went 19-of-57 from the field (33.3%) and 4-of-24 from beyond the arc (16.7%). Xavier closed the game 18-of-63 (28.6%) and 5-of-22 (22.7%) from long range. Creighton (6-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) trailed by two, 46-44, with 3:27 remaining, using a 7-0 run to take a five-point lead with 1:05 to go. Xavier (5-1, 0-1) got within two, 53-51, with 15 seconds left, but Lauren Jensen and Morgan Maly sank game-clinching free-throws for the Bluejays. Jensen finished with a game-high 18 points while Maly added 16. Taylor Smith and Fernanda Ovalle tied for the Xavier high with 15 points apiece. It was the Musketeers’ first loss of the season as they move to 5-1, while Creighton extended its perfect start to 6-0.
