Rounding Out The Weekend
A six-game Sunday saw BIG EAST women’s basketball teams post a 5-1 record, highlighted by No. 3/3 UConn knocking off No. 9/8 Iowa 86-79 to win the Phil Knight Legacy tournament, and No. 23/RV Villanova’s Maddy Siegrist scoring her 2,000th career point in the Wildcats’ 72-50 win over RV/RV South Florida in the third-place game of the Gulf Coast Showcase. Additionally, Providence completed its three-game sweep of the Friar Thanksgiving Classic with an 85-60 win over Bryant, RV/25 Marquette returned to Milwaukee to score an 83-40 win over Saint Francis (Pa.) and Xavier defeated SIUE on the road 73-65. DePaul concluded its stay at the Fort Myers Tip-Off with a 64-56 setback to Towson to finish the event with a 2-1 mark. With UConn’s win over the Hawkeyes, BIG EAST teams improved to 8-2 on the year against top-25 competition, and a 5-0 record against teams from the Big Ten.

PC’s Janai Crooms once against flirted with a triple-double, tallying game highs of 19 points, 13 rebounds and seven assists in the emphatic win over Bryant. The top-scoring rookie in the BIG EAST this season continued that trend on Sunday as Xavier’s Fernanda Ovalle scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds in the win at SIUE. Liza Karlen’s 18 points led four Golden Eagles in double figures against Saint Francis, while Aneesah Morrow claimed her league-best fifth double-double of the year with 16 points and 16 rebounds in DePaul’s setback to Towson.
