MBB Minute – In the first game of the BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle, Marquette knocked off sixth-ranked Baylor 96-70 Monday at Fiserv Forum. In the only other BIG EAST game, St. John’s improved to 8-0 with a comfortable 95-68 victory against Long Island U. at Carnesecca Arena.
Marquette (6-2) was clicking on all cylinders against Baylor. The Golden Eagles shot 58.3 percent from the field, made 12-of-25 from beyond the arc and helped force 20 Baylor turnovers.
Marquette got 63 points from the combination of Olivier-Maxence Prosper (24 points), Kam Jones (20) and David Joplin (19). The 26-point win was Marquette’s largest margin of victory over a team ranked sixth or higher by Associated Press in school history.
St. John’s overpowered LIU by shooting a season-best 60.6 percent from the field. Andre Kurbelo paced five players in double figures with 18 points. He made 8-of-11 from the floor. Posh Alexander added 12 points and eight assists for the Johnnies, who led 44-20 by halftime.
The BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle continues in a big way on Wednesday with three games – Kansas State at Butler at 6:30 p.m. ET on FS1. Georgetown plays at Texas Tech and Providence visits TCU. Both games tip at 8 p.m. and will be carried on ESPN+. Also, Xavier hosts Southeastern Louisiana at 8:30 p.m. on FS1 and Samford plays at DePaul on FS2 at 9 p.m.
