#BIGEASTwbb Minute: 8-0 On Opening Day

Flawless Start
BIG EAST women’s basketball teams combined for an 8-0 record on opening day, with No. 21/21 Creighton, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John’s, Seton Hall, RV/RV Villanova and Xavier all scoring season-opening wins. The Bluejays claimed the first top-25 victory of the season, winning at No. 23/24 South Dakota State 78-69 behind Lauren Jensen’s 30-point performance. It was Division I’s lone top-25 showdown on Monday.

Tuesday is quiet in the BIG EAST before two more teams begin their 2022-23 seasons on Wednesday. The Austin Parkinson era begins at Butler at 7 p.m. ET when the Bulldogs host Chicago State. RV/RV DePaul follows at 8 p.m. when it tips off the year against American. Both games will stream live on FloHoops.
 
21/21 Creighton 78, 23/24 South Dakota State 69
Lauren Jensen scored a career-high 30 points as the Bluejays earned a top-25 road win to open the year. In the only game of the night between top-25 teams, Creighton outscored the reigning WNIT champs 45-33 in the second half to pull away. Jensen scored 16 of her 30 points in the fourth quarter. Morgan Maly added 13 points while Molly Mogensen filled the stat sheet with nine points, seven rebounds and four assists. The Bluejays shot 50-percent from the field and .467 from three.

RV/RV Villanova 60, Marist 38  
Playing in her hometown of Poughkeepsie, Maddy Siegrist scored a game-high 21 points to go along with 13 rebounds as the Wildcats scored a road win in Monday’s opener. Christina Dalce tallied career highs of 13 points, 17 rebounds and five blocks. Villanova limited Marist to .125 shooting in the second half to pull away as the Red Foxes scored just nine points over the final 20 minutes.

Providence 69, Dayton 60 
Janai Crooms reached the 1,000-career point mark and the host Friars scored a wire-to-wire victory over Dayton on Monday at Alumni Hall. Crooms finished with a team-high 20 points to go along with nine rebounds. Olivia Olsen added 15 points and seven boards as Providence outrebounded the Flyers 41-38 while scoring 20 points off 15 Dayton turnovers.

St. John's 78, Monmouth 39  
Fueled by a lockdown defensive effort, St. John's dominated its season opener over Monmouth, 78-39, on Monday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena. The 39-point victory was St. John's largest margin of victory in a season opener in over 20 years. Veteran guard Kadaja Bailey led the Red Storm with 23 points on 10-of-13 shooting from the field. Bailey was a force on the glass adding a game-high nine rebounds and three blocks.

Marquette 75, Fairleigh Dickinson 47  
In front of over 2,800 children from local elementary schools, the Golden Eagles put on a show. Led by dominant individual performances from the duo of senior guard Jordan King and junior forward Liza Karlen, the Marquette started the year off on the right foot with a dominant victory over last season's NEC regular season champs. King went off for a career-high 24 points to go along with eight assists, six steals and three boards, while Karlen registered a double-double of 18 points and 12 boards.

Seton Hall 73, Saint Peter's 39  
Sidney Cooks and Sha'Lynn Hagans had 16 points apiece as Seton Hall topped Saint Peter's, 73-39, to open the 2022-23 season in Walsh Gym on Monday. The Hall's stout defense forced 27 turnovers and held the Peacocks to just 27.6% shooting for the game. Cooks had a double-double with 16 points on 8-for-13 shooting to go with a career-high 16 rebounds, three assists and three blocks.  Hagans, playing in her first regular season game in a Pirate uniform, had 16 points on an efficient 7-for-11 shooting and a game-high four steals.

Xavier 87, Miami-Ohio 68  
Freshman Kaleigh Addie scored a team-high 21 points in her Musketeer debut and Mackayla Scarlett added a career-high 19 points, leading the Musketeers to an 87-68 win on Monday night at Miami (Ohio). Xavier used a 27-15 third quarter to break the game open, going on a 12-0 run midway through the frame to grab a double-digit lead. Addie shot 7-of-11 from the field as the Musketeers finished with a .492 shooting clip, including an 8-of-11 mark from three.

Georgetown 77, Salem 46 
The Hoyas jumped out to a double-digit lead just over five minutes into the contest and never looked back to win Monday’s season opener at home. Kelsey Ransom posted game highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds while adding three steals and three assists. GU doubled up Salem on the boards, 62-31, while forcing 26 turnovers.
