Butler, Xavier and DePaul Secure Home Wins

Daily Release

MBB Minute –
Three BIG EAST teams in action Wednesday night collected homecourt victories, with Butler, Xavier and DePaul each posting wins.

In a BIG EAST-Big 12 Battle, Butler took an early lead against previously unbeaten Kansas State and repelled comeback attempts in the second half to gain a 76-64 victory at Hinkle Fieldhouse. All five Bulldog starters scored in double figures with center Manny Bates posting a double-double, registering game highs of 22 points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots. Butler (5-3) shot 54.9 percent from the field.

Colby Jones posted team highs in points (16) and assists (7) in Xavier’s 95-63 win over Southeastern Louisiana. In addition, Zack Freemantle registered his third double-double of the year with 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Souley Boum also contributed 15 points. The Musketeers jumped out to a 31-point lead (41-10) with 3:31 left in the first half before taking a 43-19 advantage into the locker room. Xavier (5-3) hit nearly 60 percent (17-for-29) of their shot attempts in the frame, while limiting the Lions to only a .241 clip (7-for-29).

In a high-scoring overtime affair, DePaul (4-3) outlasted Samford 103-98 at Wintrust Arena. As a team, the Blue Demons made 18 three-point field goals, the most for a DePaul team since at least the 1995-96 season. Javan Johnson led all scorers with a career-high 28 points on 9-of-13 shooting, including 6-of-8 from beyond the arc.

Despite making it a one-point game with 5:46 to play in regulation following an 18-0 run, Georgetown’s comeback fell short, as Texas Tech was able to hold on for the 79-65 win. Bryson Mozone and Brandon Murray each tallied 18 points as a trio of Hoyas (4-4) scored in double figures.

On the road against TCU, Providence (5-3) dropped a 75-62 decision at Schollmaier Arena. Sophomores Devin Carter and Bryce Hopkins each recorded a game-high 17 points. Freshman Jayden Pierre chipped in with 13 points.
