BIG EAST Teams Post 7-2 Saturday Mark

MBB Minute – BIG EAST teams compiled a 7-2 record on a busy Saturday as a few teams completed their non-conference schedules.
 
Connecticut and Providence were two of those teams finishing non-conference play. The fifth-ranked Huskies (11-0) handled Long Island, U. 114-61. The 114 points were the most by a UConn team in regulation since Dec. 23, 2005.
 
Providence (8-3) was not challenged in a 93-55 win over Albany. Six Friars reached double figures led by Ed Croswell’s 18 points.
 
Xavier built a 17-point halftime lead, then hung on to win 80-77 at Cincinnati in the Crosstown Shootout. It’s the fourth straight win in the series for the Musketeers (7-3) Souley Boum scored a team-high 21 points.
 
Villanova beat Boston College 77-56 in the Never Forget Classic at Prudential Center. The Wildcats got 41 points from freshmen – Cam Whitmore (19), Mark Armstrong (13) and Brendan Hausen (9).
 
Butler led 41-26 at halftime in its 82-58 win at California. Eric Hunter Jr. posted his first career double-double with 13 points and 11 boards. The Bulldogs (8-3) finished non-league play.
 
DePaul started slowly but recovered to post a 91-70 win against UTEP. The Blue Demons (6-4) opened the second half with a 15-2 run. Javan Johnson scored 23 points and Umoja Gibson added 22.
 
St. John’s stopped New Hampshire 54-41 led by David Jones’ 20 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Joel Soriano had 14 points and 14 rebounds. The Johnnies (10-1) have their second best start through 11 games in three decades.
 
With a late 12-0 run, No. 21 Creighton (6-4) took the lead in the final minute, but lost 83-80 to BYU in the Jones Hoopfest in Las Vegas, Nev. Arthur Kaluma had a career-high 27 points before fouling out. Ryan Kalkbrenner missed the game due to illness.
 
Georgetown (5-6) got off to a 17-6 start at Syracuse, but the Orange came back to post an 83-64 victory. Primo Spears scored a game-high 22 points for the Hoyas.
