MBB Minute: Xavier, Marquette Take League Openers

MBB Minute – Xavier and Marquette won their league openers on Friday with double-digit margins of victory.
 
A look at Souley Boum’s stat line helps explain Xavier’s 102-89 win at Georgetown. The guard shot 11-of-18 from the field and 6-of-9 from beyond the arc for a game-high 28 points. He also posted seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals while committing only one turnover for the Musketeers (9-3, 1-0 BIG EAST). Jack Nunge added 18 points and 12 rebounds. Primo Spears led the Hoyas (5-7, 0-1) with 22 points. Qudus Wahab contributed 16 points and seven rebounds. Georgetown committed only six turnovers.
 
Marquette also improved to 9-3 with a 69-58 win against visiting Creighton. The Golden Eagles took the lead for good with eight minutes left in the first half. Oso Ighodaro had 16 points and six rebounds. Olivier-Maxence Prosper added 14 points and six boards. Creighton (6-6, 0-1) played its third straight game without center Ryan Kalkbrenner due to illness. The Bluejays got double-doubles from Fredrick King (16 pts., 10 rebs.) and Baylor Scheierman (14 pts., 11 rebs.).
 
Saturday’s schedule also has two league contests. Providence plays at Seton Hall on FOX at 12:30 p.m. ET and No. 3 Connecticut meets Butler at 7 p.m. on FS1.
 
DePaul and Villanova battle local rivals on the road to complete their non-league schedules. DePaul plays at Northwestern at 2 p.m. on BTN while Villanova plays at Saint Joseph’s at 4 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. St. John’s meets Florida State on a neutral floor in the Orange Bowl Classic at 2:30 p.m. The game can be seen on Bally Sports and MSG Network.
