MBB Minute – Tuesday night featured three outstanding conference games with the home team prevailing in each contest.
No. 2 Connecticut was tested by Georgetown before winning 84-73 at Gampel Pavilion. The Hoyas used a 14-2 run early in the second half to lead 60-53 with 11 minutes left. UConn had not trailed in the second half this season and had not been behind by more than six points all year.
The Huskies (13-0, 2-0 BIG EAST) responded with a 15-2 spurt to gain the victory. Joey Calcaterra was a spark off the bench with 14 points and reserve Hassan Diarra excelled defensively. Tristen Newton scored a team-high 17 points and dealt seven assists. All five starting Hoyas (5-8, 0-2) reached double digits led by Primo Spears’ 19 points.
Providence and Marquette played a double-overtime thriller before the Friars won 103-98. Bryce Hopkins led Providence (10-3, 2-0) with 29 points and 23 rebounds. It’s the first time a BIG EAST player has posted a “20-20” game in league play since Seton Hall’s Angel Delgado had 22 points and 20 boards against St. John’s on Jan. 22, 2017.
Marquette’s Tyler Kolek also scored 29 points, which is 10 points more than his previous collegiate high. Kam Jones added 24 points for the 24
th-ranked Golden Eagles (9-4, 1-1).
Xavier owns a six-game winning streak after holding off Seton Hall 73-70. The Pirates (7-6, 0-2) played a strong defensive game but the Musketeers (10-3, 2-0) used a late 7-0 run to nail down the victory. Zach Freemantle finished with 23 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Colby Jones stuffed his stat line with 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three blocked shots.
Kadary Richmond continued his strong play with 17 points, five assists and four rebounds. The Hall held Xavier to a season low in 3-point shooting (.250).
St. John’s at Villanova is the only game on Wednesday’s schedule. FS1 will televise the contest at 6:30 p.m. ET. The Wildcats (6-5), who are the only team yet to play a league game, have won four in a row. The Johnnies (11-1, 1-0) have won three straight.
