Surprising Sunday in #BIGEASTwbb
Ranked teams had a target on their backs on Sunday in BIG EAST women’s basketball as No. 3/3 UConn, No. 13/14 Creighton and No. 24/24 Marquette all suffered road losses which included the first setbacks of the year for the Huskies and Bluejays. UConn fell at No. 7/7 Notre Dame 74-60 after leading scorer Azzi Fudd was limited to just 13 minutes, Creighton lost to unbeaten (8-0) St. John’s 66-62 and Marquette fell to a Seton Hall team (82-78) who has won four straight. The Red Storm are one of just 15 remaining undefeated teams in Division I. Additionally, Georgetown defeated Xavier 74-52 in a game nationally televised on FS1, -/RV DePaul edged Butler 78-72 in the Blue Demons’ BIG EAST opener, and 25/RV Villanova won at Providence 79-54.

St. John's 66, 13/14 Creighton 62
St. John's fended off a late-game 7-0 run to earn a marquee victory over No. 13/14 Creighton on Sunday afternoon in Queens. It was the highest ranked win for the Red Storm since Feb. 15, 2019, when they defeated No. 8/7 Marquette. St. John’s moved to 8-0 for just the fourth time in program history and remained unbeaten (2-0) in BIG EAST play. Jayla Everett scored a team-high 20 points in the win. Creighton (7-1, 2-1 BIG EAST) trailed by nine with 4:39 remaining and closed within two, 61-59, with 1:27 left, but neither team scored again until Everett sank free-throws with nine seconds left. Lauren Jensen led Creighton with 21 points, playing all 40 minutes for the Bluejays.

Seton Hall 82, 24/24 Marquette 78
Lauren Park-Lane scored a game-high 31 points, and Sidney Cooks added 23 as Seton Hall upset No. 24 Marquette, 82-78, on Sunday at Walsh Gym. The Hall has now won four straight and improves to 2-0 in BIG EAST play, 6-3 on the year. It's their first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 24 DePaul in Chicago, 84-73, on Jan. 20, 2019. Down three early in the second quarter, SHU went on a game-changing 14-0 run to take an 11-point lead. Marquette (7-2, 1-1) roared back in the third to tie the game with 3:30 left in the frame before the Pirates responded with a 9-0 run and held the lead the rest of the way. Chloe Marotta tallied 30 points and 12 rebounds to lead Marquette, including a 12-for-12 clip from the free-throw line.

7/7 Notre Dame 74, 3/3 UConn 60
Lou Lopez Senechal matched the game high with 21 points but the third-ranked Huskies (6-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) suffered their first loss of the season on Sunday at No. 7 Notre Dame. The Irish shot .654 from the field in the first half, outscoring UConn 23-11 in the second quarter. The Huskies got within five, 49-44, late in the third before Notre Dame responded with a 15-4 run. Aaliyah Edwards added 14 points while Nika Muhl tallied 11 points, six rebounds and five assists, maintaining her spot as the national leader in assists per game (10.1).

25/RV Villanova 79, Providence 54
The host Friars scored the game’s first four points but Villanova (7-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) responded with a 9-2 run to take the lead which it never relinquished. The Wildcats scored 48 first-half points, shooting .556 over the opening 20 minutes while holding Providence to a .333 clip and 27 points. Villanova finished the game shooting .524, draining 12 threes to pick up its first BIG EAST win of the year. Maddy Siegrist scored a game-high 29 points off 12-of-18 shooting while grabbing nine rebounds. Providence (6-4, 0-2) was paced by Janai Crooms who tallied 16 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double of the year.

-/RV DePaul 78, Butler 72
DePaul opened BIG EAST play with a 78-72 victory at Butler on Sunday afternoon at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Blue Demons (5-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) executed at a high level down the stretch, shooting 91 percent from the field in the fourth quarter including a perfect five-for-five from downtown. Aneesah Morrow paced the Blue Demons with 28 points, 14 rebounds and five steals while Darrione Rogers poured in 25 points and handed out seven assists. Morrow recorded the 33rd double-double of her career and Rogers tallied five or more assists for the sixth time this season. Rachel McLimore led a trio of Bulldogs in double figures with 17 points. Butler moved to 4-4, 0-2 BIG EAST on the year.

Georgetown 74, Xavier 52
Kennedy Fauntleroy scored a career-high 28 points to lead the Hoyas (5-3, 1-1 BIG EAST) to their first BIG EAST win of the season on Sunday at McDonough Arena. It was the highest scoring output by a BIG EAST rookie this year, with Fauntleroy going 11-of-15 from the field and 4-of-6 from three. She added five assists, four steals and three rebounds. The Hoyas shot a season-high .484 from the field and recorded double-digit steals (11) for the third time this year. Kaysia Woods led a trio of Musketeers in double figures with 11 points. Xavier moved to 6-3, 0-3 BIG EAST with the setback.
