MBB Minute: St. John’s Tops DePaul in League Opener

MBB Minute – In Wednesday’s play, St. John’s defeated DePaul in the first BIG EAST league contest of the season. Connecticut became the nation’s first 10-0 team while Villanova, Georgetown, Providence and Seton Hall registered homecourt wins.
 
St. John’s began the game with a 10-0 spurt in an 86-67 victory over DePaul at Carnesecca Arena. The Johnnies (9-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) had all five starters reach double figures. Joel Soriano had a double-double by early in the second half and finished with 17 points and 14 rebounds. The Blue Demons (5-4, 0-1) got 14 and 13 points, respectively, from reserves Zion Cruz and Da’Sean Nelson.
 
UConn won its first true road game of the season with a 75-54 triumph at Florida. Adama Sanogo led four players in double figures with 17 points. He also pulled down seven rebounds. Donovan Clingan had 16 points and eight boards in only 19 minutes off the bench. The Huskies have won every game this season by double figures.
 
Villanova (4-5) used an 11-0 run later in the first half to take control against Pennsylvania and nail down a 70-59 win. Playing in his second collegiate game, Cam Whitmore had a team-high 21 points and six rebounds in only 23:52 of action.
 
Against Siena, Georgetown (5-5) took the lead with 10 minutes to go and recorded a 75-68 victory. Brandon Murray stuffed his stat line with 20 points, six rebounds, four assists, two blocks and two steals.
 
Providence (7-3) rolled to a 99-59 win against Manhattan. Bryce Hopkins posted his third double-double of the season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. The Friars led 53-32 at halftime.
 
Seton Hall (5-4) defeated D-II Lincoln Univ. 82-55. Tyrese Samuel and Al-Amir Dawes each had 16 points. Kadary Richmond, Tray Jackson and Dre Davis were out due to illness or injuries.
 
BIG EAST play picks up again with a packed Saturday of nine games.
