MBB Minute – Pirates Win Third Straight, Blue Demons Top Hoyas Behind Triple-Double

On Wednesday, Seton Hall edged Xavier for its third straight win while DePaul beat Georgetown behind the first triple-double in school history.

The Pirates and the 25th-ranked Musketeers clawed for 40 minutes with Seton Hall emerging as a 73-71 winner. The Blue Demons scored 52 points in the second half in an 82-74 victory with David Jones recording the historic first triple-double with 22 points, 14 rebounds and 10 assists.

Jared Rhoden helped lift Seton Hall (15-7, 6-6 BIG EAST) to the win at Prudential Center. He registered a game-high 25 points and eight rebounds while connecting on 5-of-8 from 3-point range. Jack Nunge scored a team-high 22 points for Xavier (16-7, 6-6 BE). Paul Scruggs had 21 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. He made all eight of his free throws.

DePaul’s victory was its second straight. The Blue Demons (12-10, 3-9 BE) trailed 31-30 at halftime before amassing a 36-2 run in the second half. In addition to Jones, Nick Ongenda was a force with 16 points on 7-of-10 shooting, six rebounds and two blocked shots. The Hoyas (6-16, 0-11 BE) had Kaiden Rice contribute off the bench with a game-high 24 points. Aminu Mohammed posted his seventh double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

Jones’ triple-double was the first in a BIG EAST game since Butler’s Roosevelt Jones accomplished the feat against St. John’s on Feb. 6, 2016.

BIG EAST play continues Friday with Xavier back in action right away as host to No. 24 Connecticut. The Huskies, at 7-4 in the league standings, are in third place. FS1 will televise at 7 p.m. ET.
