MBB Minute – Creighton Moves Past Georgetown; Villanova at Providence Heads Tuesday's Slate

Creighton took control of the game late in the first half, then repelled a late comeback to win 88-77 in front of its home crowd at CHI Health Center.
 
The Bluejays (16-8, 8-5 BIG EAST) rattled off 14 straight points to take a 48-29 lead with 28 seconds remaining in the opening stanza, before heading to the locker room with a 48-31 advantage. Creighton extended its lead to as much as 23 points (56-33) in the second half, but Georgetown (6-18, 0-13 BE) battled back and trimmed the lead to six points (79-73) with 3:16 left.
 
The Bluejays knocked down nine free throws in the closing three minutes to secure the win.
 
Alex O’Connell led Creighton with 27 points, while Ryan Hawkins finished with 14 points and a game-high 12 rebounds. Aminu Mohammed led the Hoyas with 27 points and 10 rebounds, while Dante Harris tallied 23 points.
 
Tuesday’s schedule includes two games. At 8 p.m. ET, the top-two teams in the BIG EAST standings are set to face off for the first time in 2021-22, when eighth-ranked Providence hosts No. 10 Villanova on CBSSN. The Friars enter the contest riding an eight-game winning streak, boasting an 11-1 mark in league play. Nova has won six of its last seven contests and sits in second at 12-3.
 
It marks the first top-10 conference matchup since Feb. 17, 2018, when No. 3 Villanova topped No. 4 Xavier, 95-79. The visiting Bulldogs are coming off an 85-79 win against Marquette. They have split their last six games with the three losses coming by a total of seven points. The Blue Demons have won two of their last three with the loss coming in overtime at Providence 76-73 on Saturday.

 
In the second game, DePaul welcomes Butler to Wintrust Arena at 9 p.m. on FS1.
