Tournament Seeding Scenarios
The BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament presented by JEEP continued to take shake up on the second-to-last Sunday of the regular season. RV/- Villanova and RV/- DePaul clinched First Round byes, joining 10/11 Connecticut and Creighton which punched their tickets automatically into the Quarterfinals on March 5 earlier this week. One bye remains up for grabs and will be earned by either Marquette or Seton Hall. St. John’s, Providence, Xavier, Georgetown and Butler have all guaranteed games in the First Round on March 4. The top five teams in the final regular-season standings receive byes into the Quarterfinals. The BIG EAST Tournament is March 4-7 at Mohegan Sun Arena. Notable remaining regular-season matchups include Marquette at UConn (Feb. 23), Seton Hall at DePaul (Feb. 25) and DePaul at Creighton (Feb. 27).

Two games went into overtime while three were decided by single digits, including a wild one in South Orange as Creighton overcame the disappointment of a waved off would-be game winner to knock off a hot Seton Hall squad, 97-91 in double OT. Across the Hudson, St. John’s also scored an overtime victory, posting its highest scoring period of the game in the bonus frame to defeat Providence 68-62. In a back-and-forth battle on Senior Day at Finneran Pavilion, RV/- Villanova evened the season series with RV/- DePaul with a 73-64 win. No. 10/11 UConn’s magic number became one as the Huskies defeated Georgetown 90-49 in Hartford. UConn is now one win away from clinching its 21
st BIG EAST regular-season title and accompanying top seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Tournament. In the nightcap, five Musketeers scored in double figures as Xavier won for the second time in three outings with a 73-54 victory at Butler.
RV/- Villanova 73, RV/- DePaul 64
The Wildcats late-season charge continued on Sunday as Villanova won for the 10
th time in its last 11 games and improved to 15-2 since BIG EAST leading scorer Maddy Siegrist returned to the lineup. Siegrist scored a game-high 25 points off 9-of-14 shooting while rookie Lucy Olsen posted 17 points off 8-of-14 shooting. Freshman Aneesah Morrow led DePaul with 23 points and a game-high 15 boards. Tied at 40-40 with 7:30 left in the third, VU went on a 10-1 run to gain a lead into wouldn’t relinquish. Prior to that stretch, the game was tied seven times and the lead changed hands six times. The Blue Demons were without starting guard Sonya Morris and key reserve Dee Bekelja. The Villanova win evened the season series with DePaul, while the Wildcats traded places with the Blue Demons in the standings, moving from fourth to third.

10/11 UConn 90, Georgetown 49
Christyn Williams scored a game-high 19 points to lead the Huskies, who moved one win away from clinching the BIG EAST regular-season title and No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. UConn shot .569 from the field and scored at least 20 points per quarter to earn their 19
th win of the season. Mary Clougherty led the Hoyas with 15 points, with all five of her made field goals coming from beyond the arc.

Creighton 97, Seton Hall 91 2OT
Five Bluejays scored in double figures including a 26-point, 13-rebound double-double for Emma Ronsiek as Creighton halted Seton Hall’s winning streak at six games in a double-overtime tilt in South Orange. The Hall’s Andra Espinoza-Hunter led all scorers with 35 points, while fellow Pirate Lauren Park-Lane totaled 24 points and 12 assists. The Bluejays thought they won it at the buzzer of the first overtime period but Tatum Rembao’s heave was waved off after it was determined the ball was still in her hands when time expired. Ronsiek scored seven of Creighton’s 13 points in the second overtime period to lead the Bluejays to the win.

St. John's 68, Providence 62 OT
The host Red Storm scored 18 points in overtime, tallying more points than they did in any quarter of regulation, to edge the visiting Friars on Sunday afternoon at Carnesecca Arena. Camree Clegg totaled a career-high 23 points off 6-of-7 shooting, including nine points in the bonus period. The Friars doubled-up St. John’s 18-9 in the third quarter to erase a 12-point deficit, and edged the Red Storm 14-13 in the fourth to force OT. St. John’s led wire-to-wire in overtime, with Clegg draining a three just 14 seconds into the period to set the tone. Janai Crooms led Providence with 13 points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Xavier 73, Butler 54
The Musketeers won for the second time in their last three games as five finished in double figures, including a game-high 15 points for Ayanna Townsend. Shaila Beeler notched her second double-digit assist game of the season with 10 dimes as Xavier assisted on 23 of its 33 made field goals. The visiting Musketeers took the lead with 8:15 left in the first quarter and never looked back thanks to its hottest shooting performance of the conference slate (.524). Sydney Jaynes led the Bulldogs with 12 points off 4-of-8 shooting, while Tenley Dowell added 11 points, including a trio of made threes.
