BIG EAST Tournament Update
The bracket for the 2022 BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament presented by JEEP continued to take shape on Friday night after five more league games wrapped up. St. John’s, which fell at No. 7/8 Connecticut 93-38 in Paige Bueckers’ first game since Dec. 5, solidified the No. 7 seed and will face the No. 10 seed in the First Round on March 4 at 1:30 p.m. ET. Butler, which fell to RV/- Villanova 72-36, clinched the No. 11 seed and will face the No. 6 seed at 4 p.m. in the First Round. Providence, which fell to Marquette 57-51, guaranteed a spot in the 8-9 First Round game set for 11 a.m., while DePaul, which lost to Seton Hall 94-90 on Friday night, is locked into the 4-5 Quarterfinal game on March 5 at 2:30 p.m. The Friars and Blue Demons’ specific seeding in those games has yet to be determined. The Huskies already locked up the top seed with Wednesday’s win over Marquette and will play the winner of the 8-9 game in the noon Quarterfinal on FS1. All three First Round games will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi available on FloSports, while the 2:30, 7 and 9:30 p.m. Quarterfinal games will air on FS2. FS1 takes over for the Semifinals on March 6 at 3 and 5:30 p.m., and the Final on March 7 at 8 p.m.
Up Next
Nine teams will wrap up their BIG EAST slate tomorrow, beginning with a nationally televised tilt at noon ET when DePaul visits Creighton on FS1. The Bluejays control their own destiny in seeding, as a win locks up the No. 2 seed; the Blue Demons already know they’re playing in the 4-5 Quarterfinal game but could use another quality road win to add to their NCAA Tournament resume. A sold out crowd awaits Providence at No. 7/8 Connecticut at 2 p.m. when the two nearby foes meet on CBS Sports Network. The Huskies are the No. 1 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament and Providence will be in the 8-9 game. Two more games tipoff at 2 p.m. on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi available on FloSports – RV/- Villanova at Xavier and Georgetown at Butler. The Wildcats could already be locked into the No. 3 seed before they even tipoff, but a Creighton loss earlier in the day would pave the way for VU to jump over the Bluejays. Wrapping up the day at 3 p.m. is St. John’s at Marquette – the Golden Eagles will look to clinch the final First Round bye remaining, while the Red Storm, already confirmed as the No. 7 seed, will look to end the regular season on a high note. One game remains on the calendar after Sunday when Seton Hall visits Xavier on Tuesday at 1 p.m.
Tourney High-Low – Where Teams Can Finish Heading Into Sunday’s Finales
Creighton: will be either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed; No. 2 seed with a win over DePaul, or a loss accompanied by a Villanova loss; No. 3 seed with a loss accompanied by a Villanova win
Villanova: will be either the No. 2 or No. 3 seed; No. 2 seed with a win accompanied by a Creighton loss; No. 3 seed with a loss or a Creighton win (regardless of their own outcome)
DePaul: will be either the No. 4 or No. 5 seed; No. 4 with a win at Creighton or a loss by Marquette to St. John’s, regardless of its own outcome; No. 5 with a loss at Creighton accompanied by a Marquette win over St. John’s
Marquette: will be anywhere between Nos. 4-6; No. 4 with a win over St. John’s accompanied by a DePaul loss at Creighton; No. 5 with a win if accompanied by a DePaul win; could also fall to No. 6 with a loss but would need three additional outcomes –Seton Hall winning at Xavier, DePaul beating Creighton and Villanova beating Xavier
Seton Hall: will be either the No. 5 or No. 6 seed – in any scenario above where Marquette is No. 4 or 5, Seton Hall is No. 6 – a Seton Hall win only gets them to No. 5 if Marquette loses AND DePaul, Villanova win as well – all other scenarios, SHU is No. 6
Providence: will be either No. 8 or No. 9 seed; No. 8 with a win over UConn or if Xavier loses at least one of its final two games, regardless of its own outcomes; No. 9 if PC loses to UConn and Xavier wins its last two games
Xavier: will be anywhere between Nos. 8-10; needs to win out and have PC lose to get to No. 8; No. 9 by splitting final two games or going 0-2 and having Georgetown lose to Butler; No. 10 if XU goes 0-2 and Georgetown wins at Butler
Georgetown: will be either the No. 9 or No. 10 seed; No. 9 with a win accompanied by Xavier going 0-2; No. 10 in all other scenarios (a loss, Xavier winning a game)
