BIG EAST Tournament Update
Six more seeds for the 2022 BIG EAST Women’s Basketball Tournament presented by JEEP were solidified on Sunday as nine squads closed out their regular-season slate. The day started off with a back-and-forth battle in Omaha as DePaul defeated Creighton
90-84 as Aneesah Morrow set a BIG EAST freshman single-game record with 41 points. The win locked up the No. 4 seed for the Blue Demons. The Bluejay loss opened the door for Villanova to take over second place with a win at Xavier, and the Wildcats did just that,
58-49, off a 26-point showing by Maddy Siegrist, dropping Creighton to the No. 3 seed. Marquette edged St. John’s
79-75 to clinch the No. 5 seed, setting up a rivalry game in the 4-5 Quarterfinal contest with DePaul. The Golden Eagles’ win also locked Seton Hall into the No. 6 seed, despite the Pirates not playing on Sunday. The Wildcats’ win over the Musketeers allowed Providence to claim the No. 8 seed despite the Friars’ setback at No. 7/8 Connecticut
88-31 in front of a sold out crowd at Gampel Pavilion. Georgetown, which defeated Butler
69-48, and Xavier will need the Musketeers’ game against Seton Hall on Tuesday to play out in order to determine which team will be the No. 9 seed and which will be the No. 10 seed. They are currently tied at 4-15 in BIG EAST play.
Seeds which were already set entering the day included No. 1 seed UConn, No. 7 seed St. John’s and No. 11 seed Butler. The rescheduled Seton Hall at Xavier game will tip off at 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday and stream on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi available on FloSports.
Records Fall On Final Sunday
DePaul’s Aneesah Morrow and Villanova’s Maddy Siegrist capped historic regular seasons on Sunday. Morrow dropped a BIG EAST freshman single-game record 41 points in a win over Creighton, while finishing as the highest scoring and rebounding freshman in league history. Morrow’s rebounding total (305) and average (15.3) were not only rookie records, but overall BIG EAST standards as well. The DePaul forward also claimed the rookie scoring standard for both total points (469) and average (23.5) and previously broke the league’s record for single-game rebounds with 27 back on Jan. 30 at Seton Hall. Siegrist set the BIG EAST record for scoring average, posting 27.9 points per game over 17 league contests. She came four points shy of the points total record. Additionally, DePaul’s 1,767 points scored over 20 league games shatter the previous record of 1,640 (UConn, 1998-99), Creighton’s 434 assists are the most by any team in BIG EAST history, and the Bluejays’ 217 made triples also tops the single-season chart. Creighton previously set the mark for threes made in a game with 22 against Butler on Feb. 13.
