MBB Minute – Villanova Edges Providence 76-74; Four Critical Contests Set for Wednesday

The regular-season title was already decided, but Villanova and Providence still played a championship level contest Tuesday night with the Wildcats edging the Friars 76-74 in Finneran Pavilion. Villanova’s Caleb Daniels scored a game-high 20 points. Providence’s Jared Bynum finished with 19 points, 10 assists and six rebounds. The Wildcats improved to 22-7 overall and 15-4 in BIG EAST play and sewed up the No. 2 tournament seed. The first-place Friars are 24-4 overall and 14-3 in the league.

There are only two more play dates on the regular-season schedule – Wednesday and Saturday.

Four games are slated for tonight with plenty of BIG EAST Tournament implications.

Xavier and St. John’s go head-to-head at Carnesecca Arena at 6:30 p.m. ET. Both teams are tied for seventh place with 7-10 records. The Johnnies won the first meeting 86-73 at Cintas Center on Feb. 16.
Seton Hall, in sixth place with a 9-8 mark, hosts Georgetown (0-17) at 7 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. A win can help the Pirates’ chances to move up and avoid a first-round game next week at MSG.

UConn and Creighton will battle in Omaha at 8:30 p.m. on FS1. The third-place Huskies are 12-5 in the standings with the Bluejays one game behind at 11-6. Creighton won the first meeting 59-55, so a second Bluejay win would be beneficial in tiebreaker scenarios. UConn can lock up the third seed with a victory.

Marquette plays at DePaul at 9 p.m. on CBS Sports Network. The Golden Eagles, 10-7 in the standings, can finish at least as the No. 5 seed with a victory. The 5-13 Blue Demons are trying to pass 6-13 Butler and move into ninth.
