Second Half Surge Moves Georgetown Past Providence

UNCASVILLE, Conn. -
Milan Bolden-Morris had 18 points to lead four Georgetown players in double figures to lead the ninth-seeded Hoyas to a 68-55 win over No. 8 seed Providence in the first round of the BIG EAST tournament on Friday at Mohegan Sun Arena.
 
Georgetown fell behind by eight points in the second quarter when Kylee Sheppard's three-point play was followed by a pair of free throws by Janai Crooms. By halftime, the Hoyas regained the lead thanks to a Graceann Bennett three-pointer. Georgetown broke the game open by scoring the first 22 points of the third quarter.
 
Providence committed seven turnovers in the first 4:41 of the second half before Providence's Emily Archibald made one of her six 3-pointers to stop Georgetown's 33-2 run that began midway through the second quarter and extended into the third quarter.
 
Archibald hit back-to-back three-pointers with one of them turning into a four-point play to pull the Friars within nine points with 5:35 left to play. With Providence only down eight, baskets by Bolden-Morris and Brianna Scott put Georgetown up by 13 with 1:39 to play.
 
Bennett had 13 points and seven rebounds, Brianna Scott had 12 points, six rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots and Kelsey Ransom added 10 points, six rebounds and four assists for Georgetown (10-18) which will play No. 1 seed and defending champion UConn in Saturday's quarterfinals.
 
Archibald had 21 points and Crooms 18 points, five rebounds and five assists for Providence (11-19).

UConn won the only meeting this season with Georgetown 90-49 on February 20.
