NEW YORK – On Saturday, March 12, the BIG EAST Conference will host the inaugural BIG EAST Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium at Madison Square Garden, the morning of the Men’s Basketball Conference Championship Game. All 11 Conference institutions will face off in an academic competition featuring research projects ranging across a variety of disciplines. The event will take place in person at the World’s Most Famous Arena from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m. ET.
“We are excited to host the first BIG EAST Conference Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium,” said BIG EAST Deputy Commissioner and Chief Operating Officer Vince Nicastro. “This event is another example of impactful collaborations by our member schools on initiatives that transcend athletic competition. We are looking forward to hosting some of the brightest and most engaged BIG EAST students and faculty mentors at Madison Square Garden as they share their innovative and cutting-edge research. This event is certain to be an unforgettable experience for the participants.”
Each research project team is comprised of currently enrolled undergraduate students at one of the 11 BIG EAST institutions. Overall, 55 teams will compete on Saturday with up to five teams representing each school. Teams of one or two individuals will present their research to judges, who will rank them on a variety of factors including: visual quality content, introduction, results & discussion, presentation style and responses to questions.
“The BIG EAST Undergraduate Research Poster Symposium is an outstanding event for the conference to host as it shows their support for all BIG EAST students - those on the court, in the classroom, and those involved in research,” said Creighton University Associate Vice Provost for Research & Scholarship and Symposium Planning Committee Chair Dr. Juliane Strauss-Soukup, Ph.D. “Just like the BIG EAST basketball tournament is an ultimate test of athleticism, presenting research as an undergraduate is an opportunity for students to highlight their academic and creative prowess. Allowing students from all the BIG EAST schools to meet, compete and share their research is an outstanding opportunity to highlight during the tournament.”
For each criterion, judges will grade how clearly posters are constructed and displayed, if there is sufficient background to understand the problem or hypothesis, as well as how the presenters engage the audience. The winners will receive medals and in-game recognition at the BIG EAST Men’s Basketball Championship game.
