MBB Minute – DePaul, St. John’s and Seton Hall were the victors on Tuesday with the Blue Demons and Red Storm taking care of business at home
Behind the sharp shooting of Da’Sean Nelson, DePaul (8-9, 2-4 BIG EAST) secured its first win over Villanova since 2008, 75-65. Trailing 38-35 with 17:31 remaining in the second half, the Blue Demons surged to a 50-41 lead they would not relinquish, behind a 15-3 run. Nearly perfect in the opening half, Nelson scored 14 of his career-high 24 points on 7-of-8 shooting. He also added eight rebounds and two assists, while Javan Johnson scored 18 points in the game and drilled four shots from beyond the arc. Eric Dixon posted a double-double (22 p, 10 r) in the setback for Villanova (8-9, 2-4), while Cam Whitmore finished with 16 points.
Behind double-double machine Joel Soriano, St. John’s (12-6, 2-5) pushed past Butler (10-8, 2-5), 77-61, at Carnesecca Arena. As a team, the Red Storm racked up a season-high 16 steals, the most in a game since recording 20 against Stony Brook on Dec. 6, 2020. Posh Alexander matched his career-high with six steals to go with nine points and two assists. Soriano registered his NCAA-leading 15
th double-double of the season, tallying a game-high 20 points and 10 rebounds. Chuck Harris and Simas Lukosius led the Bulldogs with 17 and 15 points, respectively.
Twenty-one of a career-high 24 points for Al-Amir Dawes came in the second half sparking a Seton Hall road-victory over Georgetown, 66-51. Dawes shot 7-of-12 from the field, 4-of-6 from three-point range and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe after halftime for the Pirates (10-8, 3-4), who have won three of their last four games in conference play. A trio of Hoyas (5-13, 0-7) were a point shy of double figures as Akok Akok, Jordan Riley and Primo Spears each tallied nine points
BIG EAST play continues Wednesday with four of the top five teams in the current league standings facing off at 7 p.m. ET. On FS1, Creighton travels to the Cintas Center to take on No. 12 Xavier. Simultaneously on CBSSN, a top-25 showdown will be played at the Fiserv Forum between No. 25 Marquette and sixth-ranked Connecticut.
