MBB Minute – On a two-game Saturday, Creighton stopped Providence’s nine-game winning streak and Seton Hall won its fourth game in the last five by defeating DePaul.
Creighton (10-8, 4-3 BIG EAST) defeated Providence (14-4, 6-1) 73-67 at a sold-out CHI Center. The Bluejays got 60 of their 73 points from three players – Ryan Kalkbrenner (21), Trey Alexander (20) and Baylor Scheierman (19). The Friars erased a 16-point deficit in only 10 minutes in the second half before Creighton recovered. Bryce Hopkins (20 pts., 10 rebs.) and Ed Croswell (10-10) posted double-doubles for PC. The Friars won the rebounding battle 44-29.
Seton Hall used some strong defense in the second half to outlast DePaul 71-67 at Wintrust Arena. The Pirates (11-8, 4-4) held the Blue Demons (8-10, 2-5) to only one field goal over a 10-minute stretch. The Hall’s KC Ndefo posted 16 points and 12 rebounds. Al-Amir Dawes added 15 points and three steals. DePaul placed five players in double figures led by Yor Anei’s 13 points.
Both Sunday games start at noon ET. No. 25 Marquette plays at No. 12 Xavier on FOX with both teams boasting impressive winning streaks. The visiting Golden Eagles (14-4, 6-1) have won five straight games and have averaged 84.8 points over that span. The Musketeers (14-3, 6-0) have won 10 in a row. They lead the nation in assists per game with 21.1. Point guard Souley Boum also leads the BIG EAST in scoring, averaging 17.7 points.
Connecticut hosts St. John’s at XL Center on FS1. The sixth-ranked Huskies (14-3, 4-3) have won 15 games at home between XL Center and Gampel Pavilion. UConn’s Adama Sanogo ranks second in the league in scoring with a 17.4 mark. The Johnnies (12-6, 2-5) made 16 steals in a 77-61 victory against Butler on Tuesday. Joel Soriano leads the country with 15 double-doubles.
