MBB Minute – In Saturday’s action, two point guards led their teams to victory while flirting with triple-doubles and Seton Hall moved into sole possession of fifth place by winning its sixth of its last eight games.
Creighton point guard Ryan Nembhard guided the Bluejays (13-8, 7-3 BIG EAST) to an 84-67 victory against No. 13 Xavier in a packed CHI Health Center. Nembhard had 11 points, 10 rebounds and eight assists. The Bluejays took control of the game midway through the first half and shot 60.7 percent from the floor after the break. The Musketeers (17-5, 9-2 BE), who were hampered by foul trouble, got a team-high 18 points from Zach Freemantle.
Marquette moved into a tie for first place after pulling away in the second half and nailing down an 89-69 victory at DePaul. The Golden Eagles are even with Xavier at 9-2 in the standings and are 17-5 overall. MU’s Tyler Kolek scored 24 points, dealt 10 assists and grabbed nine rebounds. David Joplin came off the bench to score a career-high 28 points in 24 minutes. He made 8-of-11 from 3-point range. DePaul (9-13 (3-8 BE) was led by Umoja Gibson’s 25 points.
Seton Hall is all alone in fifth place after a 70-49 triumph over Butler at Hinkle Fieldhouse. The Pirates (13-9, 6-5 BE) opened a 19-9 lead that led to a 38-18 edge by halftime. The Hall’s Dre Davis, a native of Indianapolis, came off the bench to notch a team-high 15 points in 13 minutes. It was the ninth time this season that the Pirates have held an opponent to 55 points or less. Butler (11-12, 3-9 BE) was led by Simas Lukosius’ 11 points.
Sunday’s play starts at noon ET when Villanova (10-10, 4-5 BE) hosts Providence (16-5, 8-2 BE) at Wells Fargo Center on FS1. At 2 p.m., the action continues with St. John’s (13-8, 3-7 BE) and Georgetown (9-13, 1-9 BE) meeting at Madison Square Garden at 2 p.m., also on FS1.
