Wild Wednesday Sees Upsets And Close Calls

Two ranked teams fell and three of the four games were decided by single digits in a wild Wednesday night in BIG EAST women’s basketball. Providence scored its first top-25 win since 2013, winning at No. 25/24 Creighton 79-75 behind Grace Efosa’s career-best 27 points. Seton Hall dealt No. 24/23 St. John’s its first loss of the season with a 72-51 decision in South Orange, while RV/RV Villanova avoided the home court upset with a 71-64 win over Georgetown thanks to a 29-point outing by Maddy Siegrist. Despite being a starter down, Marquette scored the rivalry win at DePaul to wrap up the night, tallying a 72-63 victory.
 
RV/RV Villanova 71, Georgetown 64  
The Wildcats won their fourth in a row, holding off an upset-minded Georgetown squad which narrowed a 14-point deficit down to three with under two minutes to play. Maddy Siegrist, the nation’s leading scorer, tallied game highs of 29 points and 10 rebounds for her eighth double-double of the season. Following her 29-point night, Siegrist passed UConn legend Rebecca Lobo on the BIG EAST’s all-time scoring list, landing at No. 7 with 1,243 points over 54 conference games. Rookie Kennedy Fauntleroy led Georgetown (8-7, 1-5 BIG EAST) with 24 points off 9-of-15 shooting. GU used a 13-0 run to get within one, 61-60, with 4:56 left, but neither team scored for the next three minutes as the Wildcats clung to the advantage. Villanova (13-3, 4-1) scored the next six points to pull away late.

Seton Hall 72, 24/23 St. John's 51  
The Pirates won for the 10th time in their last 11 outings, dealing previously unbeaten and 24th-ranked St. John’s its first loss of the season. The Hall (12-4, 5-1) trailed for just 51 seconds in the contest as it shot .525 from the field and saw four players finish in double figures, including double-doubles for Lauren Park-Lane (15 points, 11 assists) and Sidney Cooks (17 points, 12 rebounds). The Red Storm (13-1, 4-1) shot just .345 from the field and committed 21 turnovers, resulting in 32 Pirate points. Kadaja Bailey led St. John’s with a game-high 18 points, while Jillian Archer tied Cooks for the game high with 12 boards.

Marquette 72, DePaul 63  
Jordan King led three Golden Eagles in double figures with 23 points to go along with nine assists as Marquette won at DePaul Wednesday night. MU trailed for just 18 seconds in the contest, using a 46-point first half to build up an advantage that would withstand a slow third quarter which saw the Golden Eagles (10-5, 3-3) score just eight points. DePaul’s Aneesah Morrow tallied game highs of 24 points and 15 rebounds while Anaya Peoples added 14 points off 4-of-6 shooting. The Blue Demons (10-6, 3-2) won the rebounding battle 41-40 as Jorie Allen joined Morrow in double-digit boards with 10. Chloe Marotta added 18 points for Marquette, which committed just nine turnovers, matching its season low.

Providence 79, 25/24 Creighton 75  
The Friars overcame a 12-point deficit, holding the 25th-ranked Bluejays to 29 second-half points to score its first top-25 win since 2013 on Wednesday in Omaha. Grace Efosa had a career-high 27 points to lead four Friars (10-6, 1-4) in double figures as Providence posted its second-best shooting performance of the season with a .548 clip. Morgan Maly had a career-high 30 points to lead Creighton (9-5, 3-3), which went 16-of-32 from three but just 11-of-30 inside the arc. Efosa finished 12-of-17 from the field while grabbing five boards and dishing three assists.
