MBB Minute – In the first full Saturday of conference play in the new year, four of the five home teams were victorious.
The action began at a boisterous Gampel Pavilion, where No. 4 Connecticut defeated Creighton 69-60. The Huskies (15-2, 4-2 BIG EAST) rode Adama Sanogo to their 11th straight home win. Sanogo had 26 points and nine rebounds. The Bluejays (9-7, 3-2) were led by Arthur Kaluma’s 14 points and a career-high 16 boards. Creighton won the rebounding battle 49-34, but UConn committed only five turnovers.
At the same time over at the AMP in Providence, the Friars (14-3, 6-0) held off St. John’s 83-80. Noah Locke scored a game-high 20 which helped fill the void of an injured Jared Bynum. Devin Carter contributed 19 points, five rebounds and five assists. Joel Soriano posted his nation-leading 14
th double-double with 16 points and 10 boards for the Johnnies (11-6, 1-5). It’s the highest double-double total at St. John’s since Zendon Hamilton had 14 in 1997-98.
Marquette pulled away in the second half to post a 95-70 win over Georgetown at Fiserv Forum. The Golden Eagles (13-4, 5-1) outscored the Hoyas (5-12, 0-6) 61-37 in the second half. Kam Jones scored 15 of his 17 points in the second half and Tyler Kolek dished a career-high 15 assists. GU’s Primo Spears led all scorers with 18 points. The Hoyas played without injured regulars Brandon Murray and Bryson Mozone.
Xavier was the only road team to win. The 18
th-ranked Musketeers (13-3, 5-0) beat Villanova 88-80 at the Finneran Pavilion. Xavier used a late 8-0 run to secure the victory. The Musketeers were led by Zach Freemantle’s 29 points and 11 rebounds. Souley Boum scored all 22 of his points in the second half and was 8-of-8 from the foul line in the final minute. Cam Whitmore scored a collegiate-high 26 points for the Wildcats (8-8, 2-3).
The day ended at the Prudential Center where shooting percentages told the story of Seton Hall’s 76-51 win over Butler. The Pirates (9-8, 2-4) outshot the Bulldogs (10-7, 2-4) 53 percent to 27 percent. Tyrese Samuel led Seton Hall with 19 points and seven rebounds. Kadary Richmond flirted with a triple-double, finishing with 11 points, eight boards and nine assists. Jayden Taylor scored a team-high 14 points for Butler.
