NEW YORK (October 27, 2023) – With the results of Friday’s crucial league regular season finales, the bracket is set for the 2023 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship Presented by JEEP.
Entering the afternoon locked in as the top-seed in the tournament, No. 6 Liberty earned a road win over Georgetown and secured its third consecutive BIG EAST regular season title, including the second outright crown in program history.
The Lady Flames will face No. 4 seed Villanova in the semifinal opener at 1 p.m. ET on Friday, Nov. 3 at Howarth Field in Philadelphia. In the second semifinal game, No. 2 seed Old Dominion is set to take on No. 3 seed Temple at 4 p.m. Both games will stream live on the BIG EAST Digital Network (BEDN) on FloSports Presented by Invesco QQQ.
In a come from behind effort, Old Dominion’s Marlon de Bruijne both earned and converted on a penalty stroke with less than 90 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime against Connecticut (5-13, 2-5 BE). Just over three minutes into overtime, Rina Tsioles found the back of the cage to lift the Monarchs (12-5, 6-1 BE) to their 10
th consecutive win, 3-2.
The ODU victory set up a win and in second half for Temple (10-7, 4-3 BE) and Quinnipiac (6-10, 2-5 BE), as the third game of the afternoon was tied at 1-1 when the final whistle blew in Storrs, Conn.
Temple’s Devin Kinzel gave the visitors a 2-1 lead in the 46
th minute, but Quinnipiac’s Sophia Pompeo connected on the equalizer in the 59th minute to force overtime. In the extra period, Temple’s Myrthe Schuilenburg scored off a rebound to secure the win and lock up the Owls’ spot in the BIG EAST Championship.
In the final game of the day, Providence (10-7, 3-4 BE) traveled to Villanova (9-8, 4-3 BE) with the final spot in the tournament on the line. After the Friars took an early 1-0 lead, the Wildcats responded with three consecutive goals to close out the first half with a 3-1 advantage.
Just 1:43 into the second half, Providence’s Florencia Talarico cut the deficit to one, before Ally DeCoste evened the tally at 3-3 in the 39
th minute.
In the 56
th minute, Gemma Lysaght received a penalty corner pass from Emma Schwarz, as the Wildcats secured the 4-3 win and the No. 4 seed in the BIG EAST Championship.
In Friday’s opening game Liberty (16-1, 7-0 BE) earned a 5-0 win over Georgetown (1-16, 0-7 BE), with five different Lady Flames finding the back of the cage in the victory.
Four BIG EAST teams will return to the turf on Sunday for the final non-conference regular season action. Quinnipiac will host Drexel, while Temple hosts Lafayette. In addition, Georgetown and Providence are set to hit the road against James Madison and La Salle, respectively .
