Marquette’s Karlen, UConn’s Samuels Claim Season’s First Set Of #BIGEASTwbb Weekly Honors

Liza Karlen, Marquette, Sr., F
Karlen helped lead Marquette to a 2-0 start to the season, which included a win over No. 23 Illinois on Saturday. Against the Fighting Illini, Karlen scored a game-high 22 points off 11-of-16 shooting, while grabbing four boards and registering an assist and a steal. Eight of her 22 points came in the fourth quarter as MU held off the Illinois charge. Karlen opened the season with a 10-point, 10-rebound double-double in Monday’s win over UT Martin. She shot over 65 percent from the field on the week.
 
BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Qadence Samuels, Connecticut, Fr., G
Samuels was the top rookie scorer in the BIG EAST last week, averaging 12.5 points off .563 shooting, including a .538 clip from deep. The freshman guard made her career debut against Dayton on Wednesday, scoring 11 points and adding two rebounds. She was 4-of-7 from the field and 3-of-5 from three. In Sunday’s setback at RV/RV NC State, Samuels added 14 points and three rebounds while shooting 5-of-9 from the floor and 4-of-8 from three.

Unique Drake, St. John’s, R-Sr., G – top scorer in the BIG EAST last week, averaging 25.5 points in a 1-1 stretch; career-best 27 points in win over LIU; shot .543 from the field and .571 from three
Lucy Olsen, Villanova, Jr., G – BIG EAST’s No. 2 scorer (22.0 ppg) in a 1-1 west coast road swing; 20 points, five assists, four steals in win at Portland; 24 points, six rebounds, three steals in setback at Oregon State
