Creighton, Marquette, Villanova Share Final #BIGEASTvb Weekly Awards

BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week:
Norah Sis, Creighton, Jr., OH
Over the final week of the regular season, Sis led all BIG EAST competitors with 5.25 points and 4.83 kills per set on .318 hitting. The 2022 BIG EAST Player of the Year and Championship Most Outstanding player added 3.00 digs and 0.33 aces per set as the Bluejays swept Xavier and Butler to secure a share of their tenth consecutive BIG EAST regular season title.

In Friday’s 3-0 victory over Xavier, Sis led the match in both kills (13) and service aces (2) while contributing nine digs. During Saturday’s sweep of Butler, Sis once again registered a match-best 16 kills on .353 hitting. Additionally, the junior posted nine digs.

BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week
Carsen Murray, Marquette, Sr., MB
Murray anchored a Marquette squad that refused to relinquish a set, sweeping St. John’s and Seton Hall to clinch a share of the BIG EAST regular season title. The middle blocker averaged 1.33 blocks per set while hitting a league-best .611.

Against the third-seeded Red Storm, Murray logged three blocks and four kills on .667 hitting. The following day she produced a match-bets five blocks with even kills and a dig. Through the weekend, Murray did not have a single hitting error.

BIG EAST Freshman of the Week
Abby Harrell, Villanova, Fr., OH
Harrell’s breakout season continued as the freshman contributed 31 kills this weekend to help the Wildcats earn a spot in the upcoming BIG EAST Volleyball Championship. The Washington native averaged 3.44 kills and 3.72 points per set, good for 10th and 13th in the BIG EAST this week, respectively.

In Saturday’s 3-1 victory over Providence, Harrell produced 13 kills, eight digs, and a block. She built on this success the following day with 18 kills, 13 digs, a block and an ace against Providence (L, 2-3).

Honor Roll
Cera Powell, UConn, Gr., OH
Powell made her presence known this week, ranking third among conference competitors in kills (38, 3.8/set), seventh in points (4.2/set), and 11th in hitting (.337) as UConn concluded its 2023 campaign with a 3-2 victory over Villanova.

Katelynn Oxley, DePaul, So., MB
Oxley led the BIG EAST in blocks this week (11, 1.57/set), contributing three against Seton Hall (W, 3-0) and a career-best eight versus St. John’s (L, 1-3). The sophomore combined for 13 kills on .700 hitting.

Aubrey Hamilton, Marquette, Sr., OH
Hamilton led Marquette with a team-best 4.67 points per set as the Golden Eagles secured their third consecutive regular season title. This week, the senior ranked 2nd in the BIG EAST in service aces (4, 0.67/set), 3rd in points (4.67/set), and 9th in kills (21, 3.50/set). In Saturday’s sweep of Seton Hall, Hamilton led both teams with 11 kills.

Erin Jones, St. John’s, So., S/R-S
Jones enjoyed a productive week, compiling 31 kills (2nd BE, 4.43/set), 16 assists, 14 digs, three aces, and a pair of blocks as the Red Storm went 1-1. Her 5.07 points per set were second to Offensive Player of the Week Norah Sis. At Marquette (L, 0-3), Jones registered her 12th double-double with 11 kills and 11 assists on .333 hitting. She also contributed five digs, an ace, and a block. Versus DePaul (W, 3-1), the sophomore led both teams with 19 kills in addition to nine digs, five assists, two aces, and a block.

Ludovica Zola, St. John’s, So., MB
Zola posted a BIG EAST-best 11 blocks this weekend, also adding seven kills, two digs, and an assist. Against second-seeded Marquette (L, 0-3), she totaled five blocks with a kill, dig, and ace. At DePaul (W, 3-1) she extended to six blocks with six kills and a dig.
