BIG EAST women’s basketball teams posted a 5-1 record on opening day, with -/RV Marquette, No. 22/23 Creighton, St. John’s, Georgetown and DePaul all picking up victories. All five wins were by double-digits, including two by more than 30 points. The Golden Eagles secured the first win by a BIG EAST team this year with an 84-51 midday victory over UT Martin, followed by the Bluejays’ 75-52 win over North Dakota State, the Red Storm’s 81-44 thumping of LIU, the Hoyas’ 61-50 topping of UMES and the Blue Demons’ 77-53 win over Western Michigan. Butler had the lone setback of the day, falling at RV/RV Iowa State 82-55, despite 17 points from Caroline Strande.
 
Monday Standouts
Reigning BIG EAST Sixth-Woman of the Year Unique Drake was the night’s high scorer, posting a career-best 27 points as St. John’s cruised past LIU. Three scored at least 20 on opening day, with Creighton’s Lauren Jensen adding 23 and DePaul’s Anaya Peoples dropping 20. Six tallied double-doubles, including a 12-point, 10-assist performance by Marquette’s Rose Nkumu. Peoples also snagged a nightly high of 13 rebounds for the double-double. Georgetown’s Brianna Scott had five blocks, leading a Hoyas defense which limited UMES to just .305 shooting.
