Thrilling Start To The Conference Season

The first conference game of the BIG EAST women’s basketball season lived up to the hype on Wednesday night in Milwaukee as 19th-ranked Marquette held on to defeat 20th-ranked Creighton 76-70. The contest featured 12 ties and 13 lead changes with the Golden Eagles using a 22-point fourth quarter to pull away. Creighton’s Emma Ronsiek led all scorers with 29 points, while MU’s Liza Karlen had 25 points and a game-best 12 rebounds. The game was tied at the half and the Bluejays led by one entering the fourth, but the Golden Eagles went on a decisive 7-0 run with under three minutes to play to close it out. Marquette improved to 10-0 on the year, its best start in program history, while Creighton fell to 7-2.

Anaya Peoples reached the 20-point mark for the seventh time this season – second most in the BIG EAST – with a game-high 21 points. DePaul shot .507 from the field, its second highest shooting percentage of the season, and committed just 11 turnovers – its second fewest of the year. DePaul, which ranks second in the BIG EAST in scoring (78.2) reached the 90-point mark for the third time this season.
