#BIGEASTwbb Minute: UConn, Seton Hall Take Down Ranked Teams

UConn, Seton Hall Score Ranked Wins
BIG EAST women’s basketball teams have opened the weekend 4-0 in non-conference competition which includes two wins over top-25 teams. On Saturday on FOX, No. 17/18 UConn (7-3) took down No. 18/17 Louisville 86-62, before Seton Hall (8-3) upset No. 23/24 UNLV 84-54. The victories brought the BIG EAST to an even .500 on the year (5-5) against top-25 teams. Also in non-league play, Xavier (1-8) scored its first win of the season with a 68-43 victory over SIUE on Friday night and Providence (6-5) handled Sacred Heart 66-35 on Saturday evening. Seton Hall has now won four straight and five of its last six, UConn has won three straight and four of its last five, and Providence has won three in a row.

St. John’s Wins BIG EAST Battle At The Garden
Villanova and St. John’s met at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night in their BIG EAST opener, with the Red Storm hanging on to win 51-46. Jillian Archer led the Johnnies with 15 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, while the Wildcats’ Bella Runyon had a game-best 16 points. Jailah Donald hit a clutch three to give St. John’s a four-point lead with 1:21 to play and added a pair of free-throws with 11 seconds left to solidify the victory. It was St. John’s fourth win in its last five games, moving to 6-6 on the year, while Villanova fell to 6-5.

UConn’s Aubrey Griffin and Seton Hall’s Azana Baines were stellar in their top-25 wins, with Griffin going 9-of-11 from the field en route to 25 points, and Baines going 8-of-11 towards 23 points while grabbing a game-best 11 boards. For Xavier, Nila Blackford registered a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds, while Providence’s Olivia Olsen had game highs of 19 points and 12 boards.
