#BIGEASTwbb Minute: Pirates Rally To Halt Hoyas’ Streak

Down 23-2 early in the second quarter, Seton Hall women’s basketball (9-3, 1-0 BIG EAST) went on a furious rally to win at Georgetown on Wednesday, 57-49. The Hoyas (9-2, 0-1) entered the game as winners of seven in a row, while the Pirates’ victory at McDonough Arena marks their fifth straight win. SHU outscored GU 22-9 in the third to take its first lead of the game, then held the Hoyas to nine fourth-quarter points to complete the comeback. Also in league play in Cincinnati, DePaul (8-5, 1-0) picked up its first conference win, defeating Xavier 76-55. The Blue Demons outscored the Musketeers (1-9, 0-1) in the first quarter 24-9 to set the tone early and claim the wire-to-wire win. It was DePaul’s third straight win and fourth in its last five games. In non-conference action, Providence (6-6) opened play at the West Palm Beach Classic with a 61-36 setback to No. 10/11 Baylor, while No. 17/17 UConn (9-3, 1-0) defeated Toronto Metropolitan 111-34 in a homecoming game for Ontario native Aaliyah Edwards.
 
Nightly Notables
Three from UConn reached the 20-point mark in Toronto, including game highs of 26 points and 10 rebounds for Aaliyah Edwards. Rookies KK Arnold (21 points), Ashlynn Shade (20) and Qadence Samuels (18) also lit up the scoreboard in Canada. Anaya Peoples led DePaul in scoring for the 11th time this season, posting a game-high 15 points in the Blue Demons’ win over Xavier, which was led by Tae’lor Purvis with nine points and a game-high six assists. Georgetown’s Brianna Scott scored a game-high 15 points, while Seton Hall’s Azana Baines led the Pirates to victory with 14. Providence’s Olivia Olsen notched her fourth double-double of the year with 12 points and 10 rebounds against the 10th-ranked Bears.

Six non-conference games are on the calendar Thursday to close out action before the holiday break. At noon ET on ESPN+, St. John’s (6-6, 1-0) travels to Yale while Villanova (6-5, 0-1) visits La Salle. At 1 p.m., No. 18/18 Marquette defends its unbeaten (11-0, 1-0) record against Bucknell on FloSports, while Butler (7-4, 0-1) hosts Ohio on Youtube. Providence continues play at the West Palm Beach Classic at 1:15 against Kennesaw State (FloSports), before No. 21/21 Creighton caps the night at 7 p.m. against South Dakota State (FloSports). Following these games, only DePaul, Georgetown and UConn have non-league games remaining on their regular-season slates. The first games following the holiday break will be Dec. 28, when Georgetown visits Kennesaw State and DePaul hosts Alcorn State.
